Printed fortifications and built forts

Post by Majorball68 »

I am aware that para units when dropped on a printed fortification or built fort do not suffer the fort penalty to the combat strength.
However it was mentioned to me that if a para is dropped on a fort that has been built and placed then it negates the fort hex sides for all units attacking the hex even those attacking over the fort hex side.

Is this the case, I just cant find it in the rules?

I don't think that's in the rules. But if the fort is in blitz-able terrain then a paradrop negates the defenders ability to call an assault if the attacker can call blitz because "not all attackers are attacking across the fort hexside".

In such a case the fort would still halve non-engineer-assisted units attacking across its hexsides and if memory serves, such attackers would not get Blitz boni if the hex were clear or desert.

I think Majorball's sources are wrong, yes. It's not in the raw or at least I couldn't find it and I never saw that in the many times I have assaulted or been assaulted in the Maginot, for example.

Maybe your friends are mixing this up with WIF Blitz, where it works that way.

Printed forts and fort hexsides are different from one another in that the first thirds attackers while the second halves them. We call the latter fort hexsides but in fact RAW calls them "fortifications".

Thus in approximately 10 seconds I found this in the RAW under 22.4.9: "Land units attacking through fortified hexsides into the hex containing the fort halve their combat value (in addition to any other modifiers). A unit landing on the stack by paradrop is never halved by a fortification unit. If every land unit attacks through a fortified hexside, the defender has the choice of combat table."

An ARM defending behind a fort hexside still gets a bonus in clear terrain however, even if attacked by a Paratrooper.

Dont know if you were answering me, Paul, but I was referring to:

It does as I stated in Post #2 and Post #4. We agree it does not negate the fort effects for those units attacking across that hexside, other than possibly the defender's ability to call an Assault (since that also depends on the terrain in the hex).
