Summary of Operations 01/15/45 (continued)

South Pacific: Abemama (northern Gilbert Islands) captured in landing operation by US amphibious force against light Jap opposition. No Allied ships from the invasion force sunk, a number of landing craft (LST) damaged during the landing operation. Objective of this action was to secure a base from which to begin a northward advance into the Marshalls. US forces used in the Abemama operation were transferred from Central to South Pacific theatre due to the Gilberts and southern Marshall island area being more accessible from South Pacific theatre bases than by a westward movement from Hawaii – Suva and Noumea being used as staging points for the invasion force. Plans are to capture selected locations in the Marshalls that may be useful in supporting other Allied operations as well as providing a secondary path of advance. Central Pacific: Current base status at Abemama (after raid below) – Airfield service damage 23, runway damage 20, 139K supply on hand.

Reloading of LCU elements over stacking limit on Abemama aboard amphibious transport continues, this operation now in final stages and due to complete next game turn. Two US divisions (24th Infantry, 6th Marine) plus two US tank bns reloaded, plans are to return them to Luganville or Noumea for rest and re-assignment to new objectives. US ground units at Abemama took minimal fatigue and LCU element losses during the landing and assault, all units expected to recover quickly. Other Allied amphibious TF now enroute to Abemama with construction engineer and base force LCU plus additional supply. Japanese LBA bombers switch attack against Abemama to airfield bombing. Summary of Operations 01/20/45

Southwest Pacific: Amphibious landing by US and Australian forces on Kiriwina Island (N of Milne Bay). Five Allied LCU (30 Australian Brigade, 503 US Parachute Rgt, 1 Australian Para Bn, 462 Parachute Artillery Bn, HQ US I Corps) and 33K supply now disembarked at Kiriwina. Two Japanese LCU reported on Kiriwina Island (2 South Seas Detachment & 22 JAAF Base Force), both units already identified as located there in current intelligence data. Plans are to immediately launch deliberate ground attack. Air actions by both Allied and Japanese air forces over Kiriwina Island – night naval air strikes by Japanese LBA, daylight ground attack strikes by Allied LBA bombers plus torpedo bombers from elements of US Escort Carrier force.

Primary objective at Kiriwina Island is capture of a significant airfield facility within suitable fighter sweep range (preferably without the use of drop tanks) of Rabaul. This airfield is planned initially to handle mainly sweep operations over Rabaul once sufficient aviation support and supply is in place to implement this. The 7-hex distance (Kiriwina to Rabaul) allows use of P-51D Mustang fighter units to operate over Rabaul without drop tanks (other planes still requiring them). It should also be noted that Kiriwina airfield is also within fighter range of targets in the Shortlands area. Plans are also to expand Kiriwina airfleld to maximum size 5(2), current airfield size is 2.

Summary of Operations 01/20/45 (continued)

Central Pacific: Current base status at Abemama (after raids below) – Airfield service damage 42, runway damage 31, 142K supply on hand.

Reloading of excess LCU over stacking limit on Abemama now completed. Remaining US garrison at Abemama includes 25th Infantry Division, XXIV Corps HQ and 5 USMC Tank Bn – all units fully operational. Amphibious transport now enroute to Abemama with construction engineer units plus additional supply. Plans are underway to move air units and aviation support into Abemama, the airfield to initially operate mostly as a fighter base as it is expanded from its current size of 2(2).

Japanese LBA bombers continue strikes against Abemama airfield. Five Jap bombers reported destroyed (3 P1Y2 Frances, 1 G4M3a Betty, 1 G3M3 Nell) – all flak or ops losses. AAR’s follow.
