On Tony, the only ones I'd be interested in is the Ki-61-Id and the Ki-100-I. I suppose I could just research my way to them and only build under a hundred HA-60s.

That's my other rub on the Tony's, at least the early version. You need to develop an engine that's 'a one trick pony'. Don't have the time, or resources. JMHO, YMMV.

I don't know your views about what is "gamey" and what is not, but Tony research can be gamed more than any other. If you notice, the late war model, the KI-100, uses the Nak 33 engine. Personally, I think that it is gamey to skip steps in a chain and take your factories directly from the KI-61a to the KI-100, but if you and your opponent do not think that it is gamey, you can jump directly to the 100 in early 43... with lots of R&D factories online and 500 engines already in the pool, since the Nak 33 is a engine that you are already producing. You could, in theory, have the KI-100 by August 43.

As I say, I think it's gamey, but it is not important what I think. It is what you and your opponent think.

I haven't done this for awhile, so I don't remember how it is done exactly, but I was thinking about researching each model, then convert to R&D on the next one in sequence with the exception of the 61-Id and only make enough for one or two squadrons of those. The models that don't have enough range to operate sweeps would just be paperweights anyway. Tojos and later model Oscars can shoot down bombers and recon/search AC well enough. Come back on that please - the fully research each model idea.

Come back on that please - the fully research each model idea.

When you get the option to upgrade the factory as the model comes online, you can upgrade the factory to the 61B. Then deselect it, then select it again and upgrade it again to the next model: the 61C. Then select it again and upgrade to the 61D. Then again to the 100.

Because the 61A becomes available in March 1943, you will have your R$D factories repaired up to size 30 by late 42, October or November. In January 1943, or thereabouts, when the 61a becomes available, you use the process that I described above to change all the factories over to the 100. Because the 100 uses the Nakajima 33 engine, you never have to build 1 Kawasaki engine, actually. If you expand Nakajima 33 production at start, you can have 500 Nakajima 33 engines in the pool without difficulty by January 1943. This will give you fully repaired R&D factories and 500 engines in the pool for a late-war model fighter. There is no other late-war model fighter that you can do this for, since most use later war engines, like the Nakajima 45.

As I say, I think that this whole process is gamey. This is one of the major reasons that I much prefer PDU:Off. There can be no such gaminess in PDU:off, since each squadron must go through each step of the conversion. In PDU:Off, you can have the 100, or the A6M8 in July 1943, but if you do not have the A6M5C and the Tony 61D researched as well, you cannot upgrade the squadrons.

If you want to research each plane in step, then I would either just research the 61 model Tonies, and focus exclusively on the Kawasaki engine, or combine Tony research with research into other later war planes that use the Nakajima 33 engine: such as the Dinah nightfighter, which allows you to open the nightfighter path for several of your recon squadrons. You will want to make Tony a mainstay of your fighter force, however, if you do each in turn, because no plane uses the Kawasaki engine after the 61D, so you should plan on building 500 Tony 61Ds to use the 500 engines in the pool.

I think I'll just be sans Tony. The one time I built them they couldn't even protect the base they were on. I think the poor Service Level was a factor in that. Not enough of them could even get off the ground.

Anyways, turn two is off to Steve.

Not sure about details of this mod, but I believe in stock Ki-100 is SR1 which is why even though they are slow for end game, many players favor them.

This is stock. And they've got excellent range. And they use Army pilots, so it would take some pressure off of Jack and George. And they have armoured cockpits from the get-go. And I can and would anyway have built 500+ of the Ha-33. I can't imagine doing that with the HA-60. I'll decide after I get the turn back. I might build just enough of each model to use as trainers until I get to 61-Id.

I forget, can you turn a production factory back to an R&D factory? As I recall you only have a brief period to upgrade an R&D factory to one working on the next model before it goes production. I think I'll have only one factory producing the current model and upgrade it until I get something I want. Maybe.

I've got a Tracker problem. I must have deleted the wpae006.pws file when I was cleaning out playtest saves. I have the -archive switch on. Will that file be created when I get back turn 2 and run it? I ran a copy of the turn 1 completed file and ran it and still no wpae006.pws file. Here's my shortcut just to be sure.

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -fd -altFont -px1920 -py1080 -archive -cpu1 -dd_sw -deepColor

I forget, can you turn a production factory back to an R&D factory?

Not if you have Realistic R&D turned on, and I only play realistic R&D on. It has been my experience that an R&D factory does go to production no matter what I set, but I get a one day grace period to put it back to R&D. So I could be doing something wrong, but that's how I do it and it works for me.

Just noticed this... You still need to have prod set to no to do this. If you leave prod 'yes' you'll not be able to go 'back' to R&D.

So it just sits there until you repair it to another model? As I recall you have less to repair if you stick with type and number of engines, or am I thinking of production factories, or both?

No, and in this area I'm no expert. From my limited experience... When an R&D model is ready (or near ready) to go into production it'll change color in the R&D column of the industry screen. So for example, my A6M3's were set to 'prod' = off. When the day came for them to upgrade they went to the 'Air' column which means production, but their color remains different. When you click on them you can change them to future models. So I chose the A6M3a which is the next in the path when choosing your upgrade. They go back to the R&D column as a fully repaired 30 (in this case) R&D site. Now my Nicks' were set to 'prod' = on. When they went into production they could not be brought back to the R&D column, and if you tried to change their model type you would only have current production models available. Since I wanted this R&D site to switch to production this was not a problem. Does this make sense?

IOW I set the column under 'prod' to off, so I can switch the model to the next A/C in the R&D line. If I want the R&D factory to go to production I set the column 'prod' = on at the last minute. Of course the above applies to the game function 'Realistic R&D' = on. If 'Realistic R&D' = off you can switch back an forth at will.
