nice to see you have almost a 5-1 lead in VPs, I will have to go back and see how you accomplish that feat.

Yamaguchi and carrier div 5 are my picks for special mention.

We have success against a Russian sub which was bent on causing havoc at Hakodate (or perhaps just transiting to the Petropavlovsk area). The downside is that she located my SAG TF stationed here to deal with a frisky surface activity by the Soviet Navy. Kako gets in some useful target practice.

I did this feat a couple of years ago. So daunting once you have moved off of the horizontal trail and moved onto the upward, ever upward, zig zag trail. There is a goal to be attained and it is a long march which must be taken one step at a time. The higher you go the more difficult each step becomes. Until at last you reach the summit and can look upon the vista that defines your achievement. The contest that is Pacific War AE can be likened to the struggle to conquer a lofty peak. There are goals to be achieved and sometimes they can appear to be tantalizingly close. But then again maybe not quite as close as you would like. Patience... and some very many good rolls of the dice, good fortune and the death of countless electron warriors bring you step by step closer and closer to your goal.

Today I achieved one. One I never dared to aspire to. It simply appeared to be a goal too difficult to contemplate. And that goal.... breaking the 5 to 1 VP barrier. Today I achieved this goal with the VP difference now standing at 5.202 - 1. Japan is still brittle as an egg tapped in wrong spot but even so she has made the western powers take notice and wonder just how will they claw back the territory that has been wrenched from their grasp.

Today I can rejoice for tomorrow it may all come crashing down. And to Todd.. when you finally do get to read this... thank you so much for sticking at this torment day after thankless day. There has been precious little for you to rejoice over but you have shown a remarkably desirable trait in any AE player - that is the ability to stay the course no matter how rugged the terrain. The mountain, however, stands before you. The Empire awaits the Allied fury.

Shilka

Post by SierraJuliet »

So, the Russians near Shilka have attacked and they are awesome. If it wasn’t for the massive number of disablements suffered by 19 Division I would have counted this as a good round. 65 Russian combat squads destroyed sounds good but the 57th Motor Rifle Davison is one that sports over 500 AV by itself. Happy too in seeing so many Russian vehicles disabled but they do have so much that I figure that unless they have major disruption they could easily back up and attack again next turn. I hope they have some significant disruption and as Todd plays conservatively I would err on the side of a couple of turns at least going by. Unfortunately, there are more Russian units on the way so the next attack is more than likely to garner 2 – 1 odds, or worse. As for 19 Division, it has AV now of only 192. 124 combat squads available but 189 disabled. Disruption is at 24 and fatigue is 14. Experience has moved on up to 61 and morale is a very good 98. The supporting artillery and tank regiment are fairly well unscathed. I have more armour on the way but it is going to take a few days for the first of them to show up.

So here is my dilemma. Keep these units here in the hope that they hold out until reinforcements arrive or withdraw back down the road in combat mode and look to hold the next hex. If the units stay in combat mode they stand the best chance of beating off an attack without incurring the movement mode penalty. If they stay they stand the chance of being routed where they stand. I guess they are a good chance of being routed whichever way I go.

What say you. Stand or beat an orderly retreat. I’m inclined towards a retreat whilst the Russians are doing their own recovery.

I plan on using as many bombers as I can to hit this hex next turn.

Skovorodino

Post by SierraJuliet »

Down the road at Skovorodino the Russians have raced in a couple of artillery regiments. They are going to hurt me in time. Lucky here so far in that no big Russian units have turned up. Supply, however, is going to be the issue as I have stupidly managed to allow my units to get locked inside this hex.

The land campaign in this part of the Russian sector could go either way. For the present though I think that Todd is in the better position. Things could sway from one side to the other on a turn by turn basis for a while.

If he sees your movement indicator that might encourage him to attack sooner, which you don't want, so might be better to play possum and let him think you are still in good shape and pound him with air attacks to discourage him from attacking.

I like your thinking. Holding this hex is the better hex of the two. Whichever way I go it does to some extent depend on the outcome of die rolls. Vagaries of the battlefield no doubt. Still have to finish this turn off but I think you have helped swing me towards continuing to make a stand. The other thing is that I'm quiet clueless on the performance of a unit on the move but in combat mode when attacked. Standing and making use of the forest hex plus the level 1 forts does sound like the best option.

Thanks. Begs the question doesn't it of just how high a VP margin have people achieved. I expect that the margin will drop under 5 before long but I got a second day out of it so it wasn't just a one day wonder. [:)]

RUSSIA

Positive results on the Russian front lines. My LRCAP did the job causing repeated elements to 2 bombing attacks to turn back. In the end both aerial attacks faltered and turned back completely. The 3rd attack got through but my flying boys gave the beleaguered grounds troops some respite. I’ve attached a graphic of the relative forces and it is daunting. Another Russian unit has arrived and now we are facing 2 very menacing looking Motor Rifle Divisions along with their friends. The troops in this hex have been ordered to stand and hold the line for as long a time as possible.

9th Tank Regiment isolated with no supply! This was an unwelcome report. Scurried off to check this unit and sure enough it has been mauled with most vehicles now disabled. Time to get them out. I gather this must be one of the quirks of the game. Even though we did well to defend the numerical superiority of the Russians allowed them to cut this unit off and deal rather roughly with it.

The orders are out. Invasion of Petropavlovsk is to commence. Keen to see just how bad the CD fire is going to be. I expect it to be bad so stand by for losses. In the meantime Yamato and Musashi make their move to join in on the naval bombardment of this target.

xAK Belgium Maru sinks at sea

So, at the end of the day we have sacrificed 2 old light cruisers, 3 xAK and 2 xAP. A couple more xAK are destined to go down. A good VP haul to Todd but at this stage they have little relevance. We have a number of ships which may make it to Paramushiro but then again are likely to be gobbled up by fire or fall prey to those lurking submarines. Yamashiro is not too badly knocked around and the trick will be to get her home without running into submarines. Some destroyers needing attention but generally they are of the older generation. I will, however, be looking to keep them in the game.

56 Division has most of the combat squads ashore. The support squads and supply are still to be unloaded. We shall have to stick around for another day in order to get as much of this off as we possibly can. It is going to mean more ships lost for sure but the end result will be a decent and well supplied force on the ground. We have one more division still to come and it should hit the beach head in a couple of days. Losses incurred as expected but not bad in the warship department. When weighed up against the positive result of getting the LCUs ashore in good order I am so far satisfied that the loss will be worth the gain of securing Petropavlovsk.

Attached is a screen shot [ships in red rectangles only] of the damage to ships which did not sink during the day.

Pumps having difficulty controlling flooding aboard xAK Florida Maru
xAK Nagato Maru sinks at sea
xAK Ada Maru sinks at sea

Overnight we lose xAK Florida and Midori Marus as their fires rage out of control. Both were ravaged by the CD guns the day before and I teamed them up to return to Paramushiro with the slim hope of survival. Miraculously Florida Maru was missed by the Allied sub which should have claimed her as a prize.

During the day we lose xAK Ada, Nagato and Kyokko Marus to the CD guns. Not too bad in order to get supply and the most of the remaining 56 Division squads ashore. 56 Div still has some support squads to land but I am thinking the ships to do this will team up with the next amphib convoy bringing in the next Division in a day or so. The only other xAKs to suffer damage to CD guns is Kinsyu Maru 10 17 01 05 (from 6 hits) and Cheribon Maru 20 17 04 25 (from 3 hits).

My damaged ships from yesterday all make it to Paramushiro with the following damage.

BB Yamashiro 37 00 01 00
CL Kiso 41 34 00 00
CL Kashii 41 35 01 00
DD Kuroshio 11 16 04 00
DD Nowaki 12 08 00 00
DD Hayate 26 44 03 00
xAK Daiyukyo Maru 59 17 15 46 – another one which may burn up.

So, a satisfactory day. I plan on awaiting the arrival of the second division before launching a deliberate assault on Paramushiro.

A shot to orientate the current action on the road to Shilka. The Russians are bogged down in the forest hex just down the road from Shilka. For the time being Todd does not appear to be inclined to move them so I've ordered a couple of units to move out of the forest hex to the south and make for the clear terrain hex next to Shilka. If Todd looks like his units are on the move this attempt is off as the river crossing into a contested hex will be fatal. If he does move units into this clear terrain I will be sending in bombers. If Todd allows my forces to cross that river I will be looking to come in from behind and trap the Russians in that forest hex. I don't see it happening but who knows. Worth a try to see what I can shake lose out here in the middle of nowhere.

Further down the road we can see the Skovorodino relief column only 2 days out from breaking the blockade of my trapped units. The next turn is the time for the Russians to attack in this hex.

Here is where we are at in China.

A stack outside of Chungking which was trapped some time ago. Just awaiting a couple of divisions out of Chungking and then we will start in earnest to finish them off.

The main focus is acquiring Kunming. Level 4 forts and 1 large Chinese corps stand in our way.

At the bottom is the forces that have sat in Kukong for what most be well over a year now. There is movement going on here although I suspect it is only 1 or 2 units setting off to see if I react.
