RE: O'Gorna Doone. Nobody named Steve allowed
Anyway, the following bases have been captured (BANZAI!!!) but none too interesting though one is a really big deal. Here is the list of fallen bases:
Khota Baru
Aparri
Vigan
Mauban
Buna
Malacca
Tandjoengpinang
Rabaul
Altimonan
Ternate
Naga
It is a relief to me to have Rabaul so early. That had the potential to get really nasty. I still have to get some aviation support there and it won't be getting there quickly. Also Buna is nice.
The southern end of the Malay peninsula is isolated in effect. He appears to be evacuating Mersing which I will be happy to occupy. I would have a decision to make but I've already done it. Option A: Keep Hiryu, Soryu, Zuikaku and Shokaku in the DEI to make sure things go well. Option B: Divide that force sending two CVs to join up with Kaga and Akagi to face the Americans. Option C: Send all four to the western Pacific and reconstitute the KB entire. Option C is the only rational choice, I think. Ryujo, Hosho and Zuiho (later to be joined by Shoho perhaps) will make sure that things develop in the DEI smoothly and in full haste. One fly in the ointment: Houston has eluded me. I think she must have turned north unless she is shrouded by thunderstorms somewhere. If she did turn north she's still in the bag. I don't see an escape route. She must be perilously close to Nell territory. She could really massively screw up some operation of mine somewhere sometime so I am concerned.

RE: O'Gorna Doone. Nobody named Steve allowed
One thing that didn't work out as planned was that I didn't capture Manado right off the bat. In all my playtests I did, but I must have diverted some of the troops intended for there somewhere else. So I landed enough troops there that he couldn't annihilate them but not enough for me to capture the base. I'm not going to spend any more time figuring out what went wrong, a tank regiment and some more stuff are headed there from Babledaob to take care of things. The plan was, however, that the troops used to capture Manado would immediately re-embark and assault Ambon, and this error adds a couple of days to that process. I hope I get there before any re-inforcements.

OK. I'll try and fill in later. The Houston retreated to Manila and took one fish from a Betty and two from Nells. The following landings occurred: Sarong, Nauru and Tarawa. Shock attacks occurred at Nauru and Tarawa and those places were captured. Hiryu and Soryu each ate one fish delivered by Vildebeests.

I'm ordering a shock attack tomorrow on Hong Kong so I hopefully have an option to repair one or the other or both there.

Soryu is almost out of flight ops due to damage ... be careful ...

Are you referring to the suspension of ops at 50 points of damage? I thought that was 50 points in any ONE category, not total of fifty from all categories?

15.4.1.2 AIRCRAFT STATUS ON SHIPS
Aircraft on ships are assumed to have sufficient aviation support and supplies. However:
»» Planes on a ship may not fly if the ship’s combined System Damage and
Floatation Damage are greater than 50. They may transfer off the ship if
docked or at anchor at a base with an airfield with a size of at least 1 (they
are assumed to have been manually unloaded and taken to the airfield).
»» If the number of aircraft on board exceeds 115% of the
ship’s capacity, only Transfer Missions can be flown.
»» Planes won’t make an emergency landing (refer to 7.0.1.1.1.1
Emergency Landings) on another Carrier in such a way as to
cause it to exceed 110% of the carriers aircraft capacity.
»» A ship may never have more aircraft on board than twice its capacity.

How in the world did you let those fighters/TB thru your CAP...no interception at all!
What were your settings?

Thanks Pax - I should have known that it was float + system damage!

First, Japanese CV's start with very low fighter complements. Ergo I tend to take a page from CRsutton (an AFB) and load their excess capacity with LB fighters. In the neighborhood of an extra 36-45 A/C.
Second its been my experience that those lousy British 'string bags' are 'unusually' effective torpedo bombers.[:D] Jeez AFB's belly ache about the effectiveness of the Netties. Those damn 'string bags' are just as deadly. I have a tendency not to let my CV's that close to 'em. They generally don't bomb as well, but then again neither do the Netties.

What's worse in my view is that its rough for Japan to have these two CV's out of action for 30-45 days. Not to mention the time to the yard and back. I know if I were Steve I'd have my subs hunting these two in their reduced state of speed, and they're all up there near Manila. I'd make you run the gauntlet.

All Zeros were set to Escort with 40% CAP. On previous turns they had something to escort and some were sweeping. The risks we take. I'm not sure yet but Hiryu and Soryu will likely go to Kobe and/or Osaka for repair rather than HK. I knew what could happen. These are acceptable consequences. When I used to play the Allied side I thought surely with enough training I could make all those damned Wirraways into lethal weapons! I still bet you could.
I just found a male mosquito (not the British kind, only about half as big) flying around inside my house. You know the males because they're so much bigger than the females but they have no mouth parts so they can't feed. Their whole existence revolves around finding something to screw before it's too late. When it's warm enough I open a window with no screen so I can see the birds clearly. That has its drawbacks, especially with hornets.
