At Singapore, Sallies follow up the sweep of yesterday by bombing the damaged Buffalos on the airfield. The heavy flak causes more damage to the Sallies than the Sallies inflict on the Buffalos, but the airfield damage will keep the engineers there busy for a few more days. They have had 2 or 3 days without damage to the airfield to work on fortifications while I waited for the Oscars to repair and sweep the base, so I could not allow the work to continue for much longer.

Splendid job by the 146th and really a fortunate die roll. Notice the odds. I achieved the 2:1 by 2 AV. I had a SNLF prepping and was certain that I would need to reinforce the 146th. I did not expect to see the Australians there, since I noticed nothing coming or going from the port, but in this case, fortune favored the unprepared.

The IJA starts the game with about 65 pilot of 70 exp. or a little better. These pilots all go into Oscars, and in some cases, the Topsy training program as quickly as possible. Here are the pilots of the 10 Chutai who got the best of AVG in this engagement.



Notice the defense. All but 1 has defense above 70. The lone 61 exp. pilot is a throw-in to give the squadron an extra pilot. He is the 13th man in a 12 plane squadron. The majority of these pilot were hand-selected for their defense, because I expected an engagement with AVG when assembling this group.

In other war news, the Japanese took Tarawa. This seemed a step too far in the first few days with U.S. CVs so close, so the attack was postponed and the amphibious group rerouted to Nauru island. Despite the heavy bombing and disruption, the 4th Inf. Reg., reinforced by the Yokosuki 2nd SNLF were able to take Oosthaven, and in North China, things went a little better for the Japanese who were able to inflict some losses on the Chinese corps that has been trying to escape isolation for a couple weeks.

A strange day and a strange encounter in the South Pacific. I sent out some AMCs to patrol allied shipping lanes, hoping to catch some lightly escorted troop ships heading west. Indeed, I did find some troop ships and the BB Warspite. The armor on the AMCs proved sufficient as the BB shells only came through one side and did not completely pierce the ship. The good news is the the ocean quickly doused the flames on the Kinryu Maru. These are not AndyMac AMCs.

I reviewed the entire Japanese order of battle for their air force last night in PDU:off, including reinforcements. In PDU:off, there are surprisingly few Tojo units. 2 at-start squadrons upgrade to the Tojo IIc, and 2 to the Tojo IIA. There is little or no reason, that I can see, to research Tojo beyond the one 30 factory that I have set up to begin producing Tojos when the IIa arrives. There are a surprising number of Tony units, and several squadrons must go to the Tony 1D before going to the Frank. If I research any fighter other than Oscars and Franks, Tony does seem to be a good choice. I have one 30 factory repairing on Tony 1As, but I may set up 2 or 3 more. I will probably want about 45 Tonies in production regardless of research, so at least 2 30-factories seems to be an efficient use of supply. The decision is really between placing more into Tony, more into Frank, or get some factories started repairing now on a very late-war model, the KI-94. I do not have as much supply on Honshu as most Japanese players at this point because I moved so much to forward areas, so the expansion of many of the later war research and production factories has been delayed.

I am pursuing the Oscar line and the A6 line with six 30-factories in each. The A6 factories are all set to the Rufe and about 50% repaired. The Oscar factories are at about 5 out of 30 repaired. I will move down the line for each plane systematically, one step at a time, and will not jump directly to A6M5cs or M8s, since in PDU:off each squadron must go through each upgrade in turn. I may halt Oscar R&D at the Oscar IIIa, since many squadrons jump directly from this to the Frank. The Oscar R&D factories probably will then be converted over to the KI-94 after I have the IIIa. I have three 30-factories on Judy and 2 on Jill. I am mostly concerned with accelerating these airframes just enough to get them online for the incoming CVL squadrons, because the CVLs have also been accelerated. Once the Shoho is in play, naval points should be sufficient to accelerate the Shinano (Yes, I not only build the Shinano, I accelerate it). I will say nothing of my plans for the Yamato-class BBs.

I have two 30 factories repairing on the Nick nightfighter, one 30 factory on the Zero nightfighter, and one 30 factory on the Dinah nightfighter. At present, I have 5 factories working on Frank. The question on Frank really is what will my production be in 1944 per month on the Frank, since in PDU:off Japan will be putting over 1,000 Franks in the air at some point. For those who have experience playing Japan in a PBEM in PDU:off, what should I expect for Frank production in 1944? 180, which is where I am at right now, seems about right, but maybe a little more? 210 or even 270 does not seem unreasonable.

I have one 30 factory working on the NIK and have not bothered at all with Jack research, since nothing upgrades to it. It does not seem that I will ever need to produce more than 20 Jacks in a month. Three 30 factories are set to A7M2, and all of the Zero factories will convert to that model once the M8 is available.

The Betties, Sallies, and Sonias were assigned to fly over Bataan again today, but failed to do so. One of several failures to perform at Luzon, so the ground troops launched an unsupported attack at Bataan. They managed to inflict even casualties in the assault despite the lack of support from their air corps and navy.

After days of intensive bombing from Sallies, the position at Nanyang has been reduced to the point where I felt that a second attack was warranted. This time, I should have used a shock attack, as the stronger Chinese units withdrew and what remained was in poor condition to fight.

It is now Jan. 19th, nine days after the initial attack on Clark Field, and one week after the broken units from that assault have arrived in Manila to regroup, so I thought that we would revisit our old friends: the 2nd Formosa Infantry Brigade and the 48th Engineer to see how they have fared in the past week. Here is the 2nd Formosa Infantry Regiment. It's experience has taken a major blow, but it is now up to 61 able squads of infantry, with all support and the HMGs back online: quite the recovery in one week.

Here are Goto's engineers. They had 2 undisabled squads after the initial attack on Clark Field. In the last post, from 8 days ago, they had 6. Here they are 8 days later. Goto has done a fine job reorganizing this unit. They are up to 38 able squads... so they have recovered at 4 squads per day, or about 8% of unit strength each day.



There are major advantages to having a network of interlocking bases with 20K supply and placing good administrative officers in charge of broken units. Iba, Clark, Manila, and Batangas all have 20K+ supply. I made a mistake in landing engineers and did not include engineers to upgrade San Fernando. Otherwise I would have 5 bases ready to store more than 20K supply without spoilage. Engineers are currently at work on San Fernando, and there should be 5 bases ready to serve the unit from Bataan. There is almost 200K total supply on Luzon at the moment, so there will be plenty for all the units to draw replacements and to regroup after Bataan, while still maintaining 4 or 5 bases at 20K+.

Jan. 20th. The BBs came in to support along with the air corps at Bataan. Then, for the second consecutive day, the Japanese come over the top at Bataan, and it is over. 44 days into the war and Luzon falls. There is still a small stack of units to clean up east of Manila, but the Japanese control Luzon and the approach to Manila.
