Gentlemen of the War College,

I have two questions:

1) OK, after perusing the WR and fiddling I found a kind of answer... though it's not clear WHY it's the answer...

2) Well, I have another, but I just decided not to ask it. It might be crossing the line. It's another one of those questions where the answer is "You'll just have to find out"...[:-]

Sorry fellas,

Hag

Oh! Current location of SS for the invasion of the Marianas: 34 at Midway, 41 at Wake, 23 at Rabaul & 24 & Shortlands. We're tanned, rested & ready... VROOM...

Have all my War College friends missed me?

For the past few days I have experienced problems relating to downloading one a business related software program update. Once my computer guy figured it out, he basically had to save all my documents and photos, download a newer version of windows and a new browser, restore all my documents and photos, and then install about eight software programs that I need for my business or pleasure.

I might soon be going through all this again as I think it is time to buy a new computer.

The good news is that I got the lawn mowed and caught-up with other household chores and repairs.

I have seen AARs that include a link for those that wish to read the entire "Combat Report."

I think such a link might be appropriate, at times, for this AAR. In particular, with regard for the Allies upcoming invasion of the four southern Marianas Islands.

Does anyone know how such a link is set-up and how the link can be posted to an AAR?

Opening Comments

1.) Air, Surface, and Replenishment Task Forces have been formed and are sitting two hexes west of Molokai waiting for the Amphibious Task Forces to arrive.

2.) LCI and LST are loaded with supply and have passed south of Midway heading for Wake Island. These ships will wait for the Invasion force and then proceed to the four southern Marianas Islands.

3.) On June 1, 1943 Amphibious Task forces will commence loading at Hilo, Lahaina, and Pearl Harbor.

4.) After all Amphibious Task Forces have been loaded and joined the Invasion Fleet two hexes west of Molokai, the entire Sea Shark Invasion Fleet will move as one slow group and proceed to the four southern Marianas Islands.

5.) Captain Haggard's submarines will flood the waters in the vicinity of the Marianas Islands two days prior to the Invasion Fleet's expected arrival. Captain Haggard has deployed PT Boats at Wake Island to protect the Invasion Fleet's return to Pearl Harbor. I believe that he also has deployed numerous sub-chasers and support ships at Wake.

My new computer has arrived. I have arranged for my computer guy to come over and transfer all my documents, photos, and software programs from my old computer to my new computer, and to assure that everything is running and working smoothly. My computer guy says that he can only give me about a half hour to an hour a day and that it might take him two to three days to get everything transferred over to the new computer (he thinks that he may need to be on the phone with some of my business software companies to accomplish installation of some of my business software programs). Accordingly, after today's posts, I may not be able to do a turn nor post in this AAR for two to three days.

Thank you for your advice.

I agree that Allied AA is critical to reducing the magnitude of the Japanese threat from the air in Burma.

I have stuffed Burma with Allied AA, including but not limited too, American and Australian AA units.

I have taken the following precautionary measures:

1.) A few weeks ago I transferred 16 Thunderbolts to Cape Town for ultimate deployment in Burma. They haven't arrived in Cape Town yet.

2.) I am presently in the process of flying all Allied aircraft to rear bases outside of Japanese fighter range. The Allied bombers are already out of Japanese fighter aircraft range.

3.) I am concentrating Allied AA units at Mandalay and building the airfield capacity. Once Ramree Island is captured, I will concentrate Allied AA units and build the airfield capacity at Ramree Island.

4.) I am standing down all Allied bombing runs against Japanese in Burma until the Thunderbolts arrive.

I have some Mustangs and Corsairs at Pearl and in the states, but I have earmarked those units to go to the four southern Marianas islands as soon as Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam are captured and the airbases can accommodate these aircraft.

Gentlemen,

The first flotilla of 8 submarines set off from Midway this morning, their thin line on the far horizon soon casting a somber vision, despite whoops of jubilation when lines were singled-up... in the next five days, similar flotillas of vessels will depart Midway and Wake, Rabaul and Shortlands, 14 flotillas in all, numbering over 100 submarines...

Over the last months, reconnaissance submarines have plied gaps between Japanese-held islands, veritable fissures in their dreams of world conquest, trying to find routes into the Philippine Sea that elude detection; others have tested the grey areas at the limits of enemy search-radii to the west and south; all this in an effort to reach deployment areas without raising enemy alarm.

It is hoped these vessels will soon gather in strange interludes for a day or two, poised to spread in all directions from their silent deployments, to blossom into a veritable shield encrusting the Marianas as the invasion armada enters into the waters east of Rota: 108 6-hex triangular patrol zones, in some approaches 6 patrol zones deep.

The brave submariners, first into enemy waters, fully know that Admiral Bravo is set sail with an extraordinary force, no doubt occasionally unwieldy by its colossal proportions, inexperienced, uncertain, course set for a target so distant that anything contemplated in Europe is dwarfed in comparison... this wild-eyed operation, so long planned, is now exhilarating and heroic.

We don't know what we'll find at journey's end—but soon, at least—the first casualty will be speculation.

Good luck, Rio!
