Here is the ordered track for the KB. When they reach the end point Hiryu and Soryu will peel off and head for Kobe. Zuikaku and Shokaku will stop in at Babeldaob and rearm to the extent they can there, then head for a rendezvous with Kaga and Akagi.

Almost as bad as losing the 'Gedunk' cruiser.

Just an FYI in case you are not aware. I don't like to shock attack or bombard any base that has a large amount of stuff I want to capture. These type of attacks tend to damage the items I want there, like oil, refineries, resources, etc.

I am not sure that this is true. I often shock attack important resource bases, if the odds are correct and the enemy does not have a lot of heavy weapons. I do so when I suspect that there are engineers present. I want to destroy the engineers so that they do not add to the possibility that strategic resources are destroyed.

In my current game, I have shock attacked at Samarinda, Balikpapan, Palembang, and Miri. The total damage to the oil at these bases was about 30, which is pretty good. Shock attacks are something that I use sparingly and only in battles where the odds are disproportionate, the enemy lacks heavy weapons, and is not well-fortified, so it is not standard for me to shock attack.

Actually, upon reflection, 15 of the 30 damaged oil was at Brunei, where I only attacked deliberately.

There is a lot randomness here, but most players from anecdotal evidence would agree with rustysi' statement above. Meaning, over the long haul avoiding shock and bombardment will have lower factory losses. Note, anecdotal and fair amount of randomness. Your outcomes above are well within my experience, but i generally follow the advice of rustysi ...

To clarify myself above when I said bombard I was referring to naval bombardment. Also to expand on this, I'm not talking about naval ships embedded in an invasion TF. These are fine as they will engage CD's and other ground targets. Don't believe I've noticed any such occurrence while doing an artillery bombardment. Then again I don't usually take more than one or two attacks to take the large oil centers, so in general there's no time for artillery bombardment. One more thing I have noticed is that an air bombardment of a port with a repair facility (ie Manila and Singers) will reduce the repair facility as well. OK against the AI as it'll just repair the thing, but I doubt a PBEM opponent will be so gracious.[:D]

I'm just really slow, been out in the garden a lot, but it's cold and wet today. Since I'm cold-blooded I have to stay indoors, otherwise the birds might start pecking on me.
