M4A2 Sherman twice in OBB, is this correct?

Post by Alpha77 »

This one appear under "lend lease" as well in the Soviet OOB, and you get twice the number from it.

Is this correct (that eg.late US units use it too) or an error, thanks?

I also noted the Bofors "army" was 88 production for sure an error (i set it to 0)

It is possible the different production numbers are the reason it appears twice.
The Soviets will be getting a certain number of them, the USMC another availability altogether.

I do not mean the ealry US Sherman, but the later "Lend Lease" and/or Russian one (which should be the same, right) No: 879 + 805

Alpha,

Neither of those M4A2 models has an upgrade, and nothing (that I could find find) upgrades to them. None of the Soviet TOEs use them. [I am referring to scenario 1.]

The only Soviet unit that uses the #805 M4A2 is 9th Gds Mech XXX in slot #7300. It does not use the standard TOE #2067. I can't see any Soviet unit that uses the #879 version.

After the allied TOEs, slots 2900-2999 are reserved (per the manual - they are not all so marked in the database). The reason for the reservation of those slots has not been disclosed. Maybe there is something under the hood that the #879 version is used for.

Post-script - just did a search, and turned up this thread:

See post #2

I'd leave those seemingly unused #879 M4A2s alone. If they aren't used, it won't matter.

Ian, thanks I leave it alone, and I also digged a bit about Shermans, there was indeed one main (and only?) USSR corps that used these tanks on this front, also we can assume it is the 76mm version then. All others should be 75mm guess the Brits ones Sherman 5 also (cause had the Firefly in Europe and rarely if at all used 76mm Shermans). Firefly was not in every unit I am aware of in the Pac.

Btw, most Allied tanks had ridiculous values in the early version, the Japanese too but much less. IJ was overrated in guns mostly 10 points or so, while Allied up to 30-40 in gun and armor.

I also found cool info about the 2pdr in fact in tanks no HE shell, BUT there were 2 HE shells for it issued to only gun units, NOT to tanks..

Just a tidbit, but Sherman versions going to Europe and USSR were with gasoline engine. Those going to Pacific were with diesel engine.

This was decision made to ease up the logistics.

Should diesel Shermans get a bonus to "armor" perhaps simulating not so easy catch fire ? But I heard actually makes no big difference...Soviets used mosty diesel too (iirc)

Alpha,

When FDR extracted an undertaking from JS to enter the war after VE day, JS got 500 brand new diesel M4s for the FEMD. He also got a fleet of landing craft, that were handed over at Cold Bay (hush hush at the time).

The Soviets had built up depots of tanks etc, in the transbaikal/far east before they moved the troops - eg 6th Guards tank army personnel was rail lifted from Hungary, but left their old tanks behind, and were issued the new ones that had been pre-positioned.

Whether these M4s were the 76mm version, or 75mm armed, I'm not sure. But if they were the 76mm ones, then at least the Soviet crews were able to get the stabilzers to work [;)]

The problem with the HE shell for the 2lbr was that it had the explosive power of a hand grenade. They existed, but they were pretty useless. The AP round was better for bunker busting.

A lot of the Matildas used by the Aust. 4th Armoured Brigade were 3" howitzer versions (see photo), or FROGs.

When I type in Sherman 1945 soviet, mostly 76mm ones come up, eg this here

I assume these were 76mm then, which makes sense, they had enough big HE guns, but needed more AT to cobat tiger+panthers etc. Well not sooo important anyway, few games will last until 45.

One more:

Sherman V (UK) should be 75mm, here is one where it said in Athens 44 (supporting paras).

Pretty "curious" photo for 2 main reasons (you can find them???)

Whow, here is the source site, some COOL pics there (incl. at least 3 Shermans said to be taken out by IJA 47mm AT!!):

http://www.theshermantank.com/category/ ... -shermans/

(but with the writings of the site owner, one should be a bit careful...some commenters there noted it already)

In your pic, one figure wears the German helmet and another the Italian helmet.
The one with the Italian helmet carries an Enfield so likely he "acquired" the headgear the hard way.Possibly a partisan as his uniform is also non-regulation.
