Bombing to burn fuel/oil

Post by Rusty1961 »

I'm in May of '43 and have dramatically reduced the oil-fields of my Japanese opponent.

I suspect that he has stocks of oil and perhaps fuel sitting in harbor waiting to be loaded for the trip to Japan in the Indonesian hexes I have been bombing.

Do I bomb the ports or the manpower to destroy supplies/fuel/oil that are in the hexes in question to futher suppress his stocks?

Any advice will be appreciated.

You can't destroy oil or resource stocks, only their production centers.

You can bomb the port to try to hit fuel, but it's not that easy to do.

You can bomb the port or airfield to try to burn supplies, but that's also not that easy to do. It happens, with port and AF supply hits and whatnot, but I find it far more effective to simply bomb troops themselves and make them shoot at my planes - that burns supply, too.

You can bomb the port which can slow oil loading to a crawl.

Bombing tankers works too!

I seem to get 'port fuel' hits just about as routinely as I get 'airbase supply' hits.
Most players just don't bomb ports with the regularity they bomb airfields.

Yaab's point is on the mark. In addition to the occasional/or regular hits on port fuel the accumulated damage to the port reduces its cargo handling capability slowing loading.

You're getting a double effect of destroying fuel and slowing the loading of fuel and/or oil.

You can, I thought, destroy their fuel stocks. I thought that was what was happening when you got "Port Fuel Hits" when bombing ports. Was I wrong about that--totally a possibility?

Edit

Seeing the other answers here, I guess I am bombing ports more frequently than some. I certainly do not bomb them as often as airfields, but it was precisely because of the "Port Fuel Hits" that I started upping my port attacks.

I was assuming I was hitting the fuel supply of bases I thought the IJN might operate, or want to operate, out of.

That's what I see too, port fuel hits on a regular basis. Not every attack but enough that it drops the fuel to make it worth it for me

The amount of fuel lost per hit seems miniscule to me.

That could be deceiving based on a limited selection.

I was once under the impression that airbase supply hits always did a set amount of 1000 points of supply damage per hit because that was what I had seen a more than a couple of times until Alfred pointed out that there is a randomizer involved that causes damage to vary.

I haven't ever run a turn with FoW off to see the amount of fuel destroyed, like I have with supplies hits, but given that the unit size abstractions for fuel and supply are roughly similar I wouldn't be surprised if the damage numbers were similar. To that end, I've seen airbase supply hits destroy numbers in the 30's... it depends on how many hits you get.

When we're talking about spending an entire turn of bombing to destroy a few dozen fuel, or maybe a few hundred or even a thousand fuel, I'd just rather bomb something else.
