Yamamoto's dream (tomamars J VS Sundowners A)

Post by tomamars »

Time to start another AAR as IJ with my opponent being Mr.Sundowners, a seasoned player from US.
Our game will be as following:
Scen001
1 day turn
Historical first turn
PDU off

House rules:
No house rules.

My strategy:
Since this is an Scen001, PDU off game, I’ll go for auto-win since there is no way I can survive past 1944 knowing my opponents abilities. So it’s going to be an wild ride in true Bushido spirit! BANZAI!!!

And it continued very well with exception of Zero losses. That is usual result you get from those settings and I believe they are worth it - you don’t get second chance to catch Allies with their pants down...

PoW and Repulse got lucky with CAP flying overhead, more than adm.Phillips had in RL. Repulse is in real bad shape while PoW will survive to fight the other day. But there should be more work to be done on Repulse to finish him for good - I’ll give that task to subs.

RE: Yamamoto's dream (tomamars J VS Sundowners A)

Post by tomamars »

CONCLUSION:
Dec.7-th attack in PH was a success so why not make it into total success - I’ll linger around just a little while longer. Philippines started OK but not OK enough. I’ll try to suppress Clark to prevent those B17s from going anywhere and also Manila to maybe catch some of those pesky subs while under repair. A lot of sweeping and carpet bombing will have to be done in next couple of weeks to make it so.
I’ll try to keep the schedule in Malaya and Borneo and also chase me some enemy ships. Balikpapan and Palembang are top priorities but their respective invasions will be done carefully and only after RN and ABDA are suppressed - but also not too late in order to prevent serious enemy reinforcements to take hold. We’ll see...
China: Hong Kong and Wenchow airfields are primary targets in order to prevent those forts to go up. I’ll try a surprise dash on Wenchow with those two unrestricted divisions in HI with a little help from Takao HQ and LBA. Hopefully HI won’t be totally trashed when I grab it so my supply situation in China will not suck too bad... Also I plan to employ those crappy Marys, Anns and other junk to plow through Chinese airfields in order to prevent forts and / or to deprive them of supply. AVG scares the shit out of me.
Industry and R&D:
I’m planning to go conservative here, increase in vehicle production, heavy research of Zero and K-43 lines (10-12 factories each), some research in Judy, Jill, Frank, Jack, George and K-44 lines or those that will repair faster. I’m not concerned with late war planes and want to conserve the supply for now - I’ll think about those come 43. For now, I’ll go heavy on engines, 32, 33 and 35 being the priorities and Ha-60, Ha-43 and Ha-45 carrying the brunt of the research. Rationale here is that I want to finance my expansion as much as I can early, build my engine pools and in one year’s time react according to situation. If I could get over 1:3 during 1943 than there is really no need to invest into late war machines, is there?
I’m still not sure what to do with Musashi and Yammato, those are cool vessels but they burn fuel like mad and make sense only if I have supremacy in the air. Their existence depends on weather I’ll manage to take down CV or two early in the campaign or not. If not or if, Heaven forbid, I loose some of my own in the process, I’ll halt them and accelerate all other CV, CVL and CVEs. Hopefully, we’ll get to see those 46cm monsters in action.
My biggest concern right now are his CVs. Since I’m planning to stick around Pearl, they’ll have a free reign over my shipping lines between HI and the front lines. My search right now is crap, SIGINT not worth mentioning so I’ll have to rely heavily on PBs to at least increase the chance of stumbling on him in the drive to the HI or DEI. I think I’ll keep baby KB in the HI for a while until KB reaches Truk. This might mean a little delay in the DEI front but better save than sorry.

Dec.8.1941, Day of million clicks

CENT.PAC. AREA

So I decided to stick around the Pearl for a while. Idea is to lure his surface dash and meet it with wall of subs, Vals and Kates, continuing PH disaster and in the same time sweeping Pearl. KB will position itself 7 hexes north of PH and place ton of subs and surface TF between itself and the Pearl. Let them come!

Allied DD losses around PH are humongous and we hope this will give me some operational freedom in months to come. Only bad thing here was failure of my sweepers to fly where only only group arrived over Pearl and got mixed results:

Morning Air attack on Pearl Harbor , at 180,107

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid detected at 44 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18

Allied aircraft
P-26A x 1
P-36A Mohawk x 17
P-40B Warhawk x 29
F4F-3 Wildcat x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-36A Mohawk: 1 destroyed
P-40B Warhawk: 3 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x A6M2 Zero sweeping at 15000 feet

Not happy with this at all, lost 3 veteran pilots for nothing gained. Wonder why other groups failed to show up...
