Patrol, floatplanes should have cameras

I think it is the only solution unfortunately the naval recon of harbors doesn't give any information without them.

Opinions?

I agree with your main point - it's too easy to hide ships disbanded in port. Naval search won't pick them up at all.

However, just giving them cameras won't solve the problem - you will still have to run a recon mission over a specific port - naval search still won't do the job

I dunno. Visual recon was very limited especially over large bases that were heavily defended. Recon planes had to fly high or less they were subject to fighters and AA. Just look at the inaccuracy of visual reports all throughout the war. Photos really were the source of accurate information- not so much visual recon.

Yes, bit it is still better than nothing.

crsutton, at 20k or more except for late war a fast recon plane could do it. Also that many harbors are not big complexes with warning radars and several fighters available to catch the intruder.

I view use of dot bases as stealth search bases as kind of gamey. Recon and nav search assets should have some chance of raising the detection level of dot bases to reveal them. There are counters of course, but some of those could be considered gamey.

Would be handy, but did they have cameras in RL?

It would be easy to give a hand-held camera to a crewman on a PBY and tell him to take some pictures as you flew over a recon or search target, but ...
handheld cameras of the day did not have the large-format film of a true recon camera, nor the huge lens, nor the focal length, and probably not the shutter speed necessary to get really clear detail at altitude. So even if you consider FPs and Flying Boats having a camera on board they should not result in as much D/L increase as a Recon aircraft.

Most patrol planes had option for cameras. Because often they had also to recon, harbor and even ships.

But this is not a case of RL but of game engine limitation.
A patrol and a floatplane in game cannot detect a CV - or any other ship in an harbor without a camera.

Doesn't it depend on the mission setting? Nav Search does not ID ships in harbour but Recon does?
