Currently, what is the optimal fog of war of the game in hex?
By optimal, I mean, for the player:
- quick play response time
-realistic in relation to historical reality
-confortable for gameplay

I'd say 14 to 16 hexes is a good average.

@ UP, Be serious Please Because it's not political![:D]

@Paullus, I prefer 8-12 because Speed, AI and action on screen is better for my portable PC.

Rico, like everything else, it depends. With my badass gaming rig I won't experience any lag until about turn 12 or so. With technical issues not being a problem I would say historical Fog of War is the way to go but it has to be fun and there's no fun with technical problems. In that case it would be left to the individual's PC's limitations. Did I mention I have a badass gaming rig?

@ UP,It is interesting to see today the average rendering of the game through the fog of war experience of each other, because tomorrow we can objectively better judge Peter's improvements.

@ Hailstone,If on the 12th turn the program generates a loop, your tackle is useless.[;)]

@Hailstone:

I also noticed that lag appears to be "proportional" to the game turn. Most likely, this is due to the fact that in the first turns the PC must make far less LOS checks since the opposing forces are too far away.

Even a powerful machine, anyway, is no guarantee for smooth play: when I gave up playing Prokhorovka, I had a 70-second lag before being able to move. I attached a saved game (it's still there, if you want to try it) so that others can play it, because I wanted to know if the issues was related to my PC: Peter got a 30 second delay and Paullus got 35-45 seconds. This is an improvement of some sort, but moving a T-34 (17 MP) will require at least 8.5 minutes (and the Russians have lots of them in that CG).

Perhaps we should limit ourselves to small night scenarios, as possible interactions increase geometrically with the number of units and with the visibility range.

I also have the impression that the lag issue has greatly worsened after the implementation of v.1.052. Is it possible to have a second, non-updated ToTH install? I would like to run some large scenarios to see it this is true.

@Rico:

I think Peter is already doing his best improve the game, but we must always take into account that ToTH is basically a one-man-show (and, anyway, we already bother him a lot [:D]).

I think we could try playing a given scenario, and measuring the lag, to see how different machines behave. Then we can edit it (increasing or decreasing visibility) and see how this affects the lag.

As for political issues, this is my first and last statement: I refuse to be involved, especially since my fellow countryment elected Silvio Berlusconi as Prime Minister not once, but thrice[:D]).

UP844, well I done did it. I played a couple of turns with no specific strategy other than to observe lag. On my rig, did I mention I got a badass rig, initially showed a lag for the armor of about 5-6 seconds which is the time it takes for the tank sound to stop. So, by waiting for the sound to end, the AFV moved instantly to the next hex. The infantry had about the same lag but it did not coincide with the infantry movement sound. I think its because the infantry audio is of shorter duration than the armor. The infantry will not move instantly but after a few seconds after the audio stopped. There's no connection with audio and lag. Apparently, the more processing power your PC can produce makes a big difference. I was experiencing a 6 second lag compared to your 70 seconds. Did I mention I got a badass rig?[:D]

Hailstone, looks like you are the only one who would be able to play Kursk [:)].

Did you purchase your rig at an Area 51 yard sale? [:D]

Rico, sometimes its better to be lucky than good! And no, I cannot play the Kursk campaign either by only making it to turn 38 of the Psel Bridgehead with about a one minute delay. That's too much for me. Considering I had to throw in my sister on top of the $1000 bucks to the Area 51 Alien Christmas Fund for my new toy I just can't be making anymore sacrifices.

Hey Rico, should Hailstone's badass rig be added to the 'TOTH Organisation' as a separate entity? [:D]

Rico, I've downloaded your recent scenario and will put it to the test. To UP844, Agent S, and Cataphract88 my badass rig is deeply touched by your sentiments but Rico is right it is all about respect. Speaking of respect, you know my wife refuses to allow my badass rig in the bedroom! I was forced to cuddle my badass rig for at least an hour in the hallway before it got over it. [X(]
