The Operational Art of War IV gets a Live Preview!

Post by Daniele »

Few wargames of the past have reached a legendary aura like The Operational Art of War. The incredible flexibility of the editor, the massive number of playable scenarios, the quality of the AI, made Norm Koger’s latest effort an operational wargame with unsurpassed standard.

No surprise that the recent announcement of a new chapter in the series captured the interest of many wargamers out there.

But as the saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words”, a Live Stream is definitely better than 1000 pictures, and applying this rule, we are happy to announce that next week on Tuesday 27th we will be taking a look at The Operational Art of War IV LIVE!

Agrippa Maxentius will play some of the scenarios available in the game, including Iwo-Jima and Korea 1951 and show-off the different strategies, the features, the key innovations and more.

We will stream Tuesday 27th at 11 am CEST / 3 pm GMT / 5 pm CEST and for the first time ever, we will be live simultaneously on our official Twitch Channel, Youtube Channel and Mixer Channel at the same time.

Was unsure about the time. I'm interpreting as 1100 US Eastern time (EDT), 3PM GMT, 1700 Central Europe. Yes?

Excited, just not the biggest fan of Agrippa. The Iwo Jima scenario should be fun to watch.

Watching it right now. Some notes:

-The tool tip is back. Is there a key to toggle it or acts just the same as before?
-I see there are now disabled/destroyed/damaged categories in the combat report. Nice.
-We get to see the new combat planner, much improved.
-What do the two top left buttons do?
-We finally got an ETA from Ralph himself [:D]

On the tooltip, first of all it is important to mention that the old "3D" graphics you could see on the tooltip and on the battleplanner are going away: they have already been replaced with the new terrain graphics on the latest beta build, but since it was just fresh off the presses, we did not use it for the stream.

Otherwise, the tooltip's delay (in appearing) is adjustable in the game settings and right now we are looking for the sweetspot setting for it. :) But if you just don't want it, you can set a very high delay and you'll never see it appear.

Top left buttons: the button with the yellow flags (which while presently look the same, has a different function to the flags on the right-hand panel - those end the turn) switch between different views:
-normal view (default)
-review battles, where you can see icons for battles that happened
-PO (AI) view where you can review the AI settings for your units. This can be useful when you are playing a big scenario and you wish to hand over some of your formation to AI control.

The grey arrow-ish button toggles on and off a number of buttons dealing with the UI, letting you hide or show the different panels that by default are visible on the right side of the screen.

So could it release this year? Or is it more probable next year?
