On the night of 28 DEC, LCDR Hajime Nakagawa, captain of The Emperor's I-4 submarine, got the report of a single contact off the West coast of California near Los Angeles. Going to periscope depth, the captain could not believe his eyes. True to the radar was a single contact, a US carrier, the USS Saratoga. Nakagawa was nervous, not being an comfortable with torpedoes. He launched a spread of 4. One hit.

This seems very unlikely to me, especially so close to a major base for the Saratoga to limp into a repair yard. Did the allies lose any carrier planes that day?

I was under the impression that if a ship showed on the Ships Sunk list then they were really sunk.

Not true, unfortunately. In the operations report you will occasionally see a message of the sort "Ship X, previously reported as sunk, was sighted or engaged at location Y." Another version goes something like this: "Intelligence reports that Ship X, previously reported as sunk, as back in service." Deducing which ships are really sunk as opposed to those which are merely badly damaged is something of an art.

I have had ships come and go off the sunk list and even points for them later disappear from the VPs. One torpedo on a BC Saratoga probably will not sink her and unless it was listed as ammo or fuel explosion it is probably not even heavily damaged.

A couple of things today. We have moved to 1942, Jan 2. The attack on Manado has been slow but I expect to take the port in the next day or two. This will clearly be a war of attrition for awhile. It looks like he got everyone back to Singapore, so I have been bombing and ground attacks by air as a prelim to the assault. That will start tomorrow, but I expect it to take awhile.

He has moved back into Clark from Bataan. Both Clark and Manila are surrounded, but again I expect long drawn out affairs. Rabaul has been taken and with no carriers in sight, more expansion is possible.

And then there is China. Whether it is RHS or my illustrious opponent, but he has created about 5 super stacks of forces (1000-1500 AV). The current Japanese deployments can't deal with that. Fouchow and Sa Shih have been lost. However, the one that worries me the most is headed to Hanoi. In any respect some re-distribution of forces will be required. At best I can slow him down with some air strikes, until I can get sufficient force to surround him. After that China, if I can eliminate the super stacks, may be fairly easy to push through. I am still not close to Burma and cutting those supply lines, but I am also expecting another super stack when I get there.

RHS has supplied 2 surprises (one might be operator error but I can't figure out how I could have done it).

After 1 month, supply and fuel are particularly low. The biggest hit being Babeldaub going from 70,000+ fuel to 0 in a turn or two. It doesn't make sense and I sure don't recall sending it anywhere. This will put a real hold on expansion, until I can correct the situation. At least Truk is in fair shape.

The second point is RHS and that is that the production works differently. I am not getting planes out and it appears that factories are highly damaged. It also appears that I have to move fuel and oil as well as supplies and resources between Japanese cities. I found a very old post on Level 1 RHS (this is Level II), which provided a very high level overview. But most of my other research and options don't seem to apply. So this may very much be like a different game. Which is fine, but is a curve over my expectations.

So the combination of all that is that I will have to be cautious where I go. I must clean up Malaya and the Philippines. I would like to pull the US carriers into a fight, but options are limited. Java and South Borneo may be a month away from attacking.

10 days have passed and only small action. I am close to getting the logistics back to level keel as fuel and supplies are arriving at the key bases. That will allow the offensive to start back up shortly.

We did take Manado. Had a landing at Kiska (AK) and took that island. Will try to make it a submarine home for the subs off the US coast. Captured Shan Wei in China. But most activity in China has gone the allies way.

On the 8th we invaded Wake Island. Fighting continues there. There is no evidence of a response by the allies.

I tried a couple of attacks on Singapore but just not enough horse power. Clark and Manila have been constantly bombarded and hit with some air attacks. The interesting thing is I seem to get the disruption from the bombardment as opposed to the allies. Anyway, forces are being re-deployed to help both attacks.

The allies have been quiet, so I must assume they are laying in wait for our next move.

We have reached the 24th of Jan 1942. It took about 15 days to fix the fuel and supply problems. That kept the operations at a minimum. As major issues have arisen with RHS, maybe surprises is a better term, Charlie and I have compared notes. One of the key elements appears to be the islands and atolls. I had landed on Wake early in the month.

Kiska was taken easily and has now been upgraded to a sub base. All subs working the west coast will now operate from here.

I have finally cleared out northern Malaya and will start working north into Burma. Better late than never.

Besides moving a lot of fuel and supply around, I have been working to get more forces. Bought some out of Kwantung and am sending them to Singapore and Philippines. We are still several days before engaging there again.

The war in China has stabilized a bit. After learning that bombardments are not effective, I have been harassing his troops with ground attacks from the air. We have almost complete air superiority. This seems to slow them down.

I have also moved some units to help bolster his attack points. At the moment neither of us is making any headway. Attacks range from the South China Sea to Mongolia. The biggest threat at the moment is Amoy. Need to prevent losing the port.

With no sign of his carriers or Force Z, or any real air either, he has to be laying in wait somewhere. Given current limitations, I think an approach along the east of Burma and attacking Java in the middle may be the safest approach. I can load up on some land based air along with a small carrier force. I may buy a unit or two to go after Port Moresby backed by the KB. I control most of Malaya, so IF I can get Singapore then we can go after the rest of Sumatra.

Finally, he has left my sub base off Alaska alone, so We have stepped up the patrols along the San Diego-San Francisco coastal area.

On our west flank we have captured Pegu and the rail line east of Rangoon. Rangoon is another castle so we will bypass it. As I indicated previously, I suspect to find a death stack defending the Burma road. But will at least go up and confirm.
