most realistic games series ever
In your opinion which military strategy games series (games) are most realistic ever? In my list there are: Command Ops, Combat Mission, Close Combat, Panzer Command (Ostfront), Graviteam Tactics, TacOps4, TOAW III, Theatre of War, AGEOD's games and maybe Hearts of Iron. I have never tried War in the East/West
RE: most realistic games series ever
then it seems War in the East/West is needed also so you may or could make a judgement call?
then there's Strategic Command, Battle Academy, Unity of Command and more than a few others which also fit the bill to be looked at and judged, not saying any are better or worse for not being in the list to start off with, as with all lists, you have to start somewhere [:D]
i couldn't pick one either, as all have their merits and strengths and weaknesses in their own rights
and no pole or question is or should be without the daddies
World in Flames / War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition
where epic just goes up a notch etc

All games below are that level above the norm for realism and not wargame light.
Top
CMANO/Harpoon
TSS series (no other game does FOW this extreme at this scale)
GGWITP AE
Next
WiF (guessing. Could be in top section)
Command Ops
Combat Mission 1 and 2
GGWITE
GGWITW
Steam and Iron/Rule the Waves
Then
Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa
Graviteam Tactics Series
Flashpoint Campaigns
WW1 Gold
TOAW (could sneak into section above)
Squad Battles
Steel Panthers

RE: most realistic games series ever
Did you mean realistic as in graphics or detailed as in anything Gary has made or just seems like a credible simulation of the actual experience?
ASL is incredibly realistic, massively detailed and credible. But it's also supremely hard to get a human opponent for ftf so it tends to get a lot of occalades, but I sold mine due to lack of use.
I think Battle Academy is 'gamey' but, you likely will play it more than most of your collection. I think the first incarnation of Strategic Command was a great game, pity about the utterly broken PBEM security. Because the AI is so dumb it is a waste of time. I like how Command Ops enforces logical command and control. Some how we need real time in a game without it becoming a click fest. Close Combat is hard to beat vs a human, but a waste of drive space vs the AI. I don't think detail makes a game great, it just makes a game detailed. I've heard of some really gamey nonsense even with Gary's designs.
Best satisfaction I have had with a war game other than Steel Panthers would be Battle Academy. All the challenge of Chess, and it takes no time to learn how to play it. Realistic? is any war game truly realistic? I'm never afraid while playing any of them. No smell of death, no destruction and chaos and long waits interrupted by moments of sheer terror.

Wargame, 05% of the time.
Play with Barbies 05% of the time.
Play with Legos 10% of the time.
Build models 20% of the time
Shopping 60% of the time.
Exlains why I buy em more than I play em.

Campaigns on the Danube (COTD)
Why?
Because of the 100 or so games I've got it is the one which most simulates the strategic decisions and order giving in pre railway/telegraph times.
You send an order to a corps commander to move from A to B. It takes a day for the messenger to take the order by which time the corps commander may have moved. Until you hear back you don't know if the order got through. You have to predict where corps may be.
It is remarkably like reading Jomini's description of Napoleon lying on the floor surrounded with maps, measuring the number of days march between locations with a set of compasses.
I just wish there were more games like this. Give it a try - it doesn't cost much; or at least read the AARs on the forum.

RE: most realistic games series ever
felt I had to put up my first ever post in these forums despite reading and playing matrix stuff for years.
my vote goes to "campaigns on the danube"for the nineteenth century this game has never been bettered and I consider it a crying shame that it hasn't been expanded on.what some of the modders on this site could have done with an editor boggles the mind.

Impressive...though sadly not a game as such, more a military training simulation. I'd like to see this sort of thing ion action..though I imagine it maybe a rather dry experience. More Glantz than Mark:)

Sorry, is TSS for Total System Scenic wargames or something else?
Thanks
