So I just bought Command: Modern Air Naval Operations Wargame of the Year Edition and the serial number provided only works for the base game and will not work for the included "Mother Inferno" and "Chains of War" when it asks when installing the game.

The base game does not include the dlc (downloadable content) such as Chains of War and Northern Inferno. Those are separate products and must be purchased separately.

Likewise for the "Command Live" scenarios.

Even the Game of the Year Edition? What is messed up then is that it asks for the 2 serial numbers for those DLC when running the Install File.

Because that's how you license those two when you purchase them. They are physically there in the install, just disabled until you purchase a license. So a hint - if you do eventually purchase them, don't download the associated files (they also work standalone and that's what those files are for). Just run the installer you have and input the new license numbers.

And welcome to the biggest time sink ever (I mean that in a good way). If you have questions, the developers and the people who hang out on the board here are very helpful and knowledgeable. And check here for some good getting started info:

you might be used to the exploitative nature of DLC these days but don't feel shortchanged,

realistically you can put 1000+ hours into the content in the base game + community pack

LIVE and expansions are just gravy.

Game of the Year Edition was released long before any of the DLC was announced.
