Beginning of the End Scenario and Japanese AI.

Post by anglonorman »

Hi Guys,

I have been playing the Beginning of the end scenario May42 start as the Allies and I am finding that by late 42 (I am at Nov 18,1942) the IJN, JAAF, IJA have essentially gone AWOL after their defeat at Guadalcanal. When I attack Rabaul there are only like 10-15 zero's that respond to air raids. There are usually just merchant shipping in the harbour and the Kido Butai looks like it has returned to home waters and will not come out and fight for the SW pacific nor range out to attack the outer reaches of Allied territory. In BI theater the IJA does not attack or move any forces into Burma except on the coast. They do conduct air raids on Calcutta and surrounding areas including the AF's at Imphal and Kohima. the Japanese AI seems to be more aggressive in China.
I am also conducting a historical invasion of Munda, Vella Lavella and hope to get to Empress Augusta Bay but with Air raids to these areas including the Japanese AF at Buka (they had one at Bonis as well but not on this map/scenario) the response is lack lustre from the Japanese considering they built up these bases with tens of thousands of men and many fighters.

I would check out the following thread from Kull. In it he details what are the latest and greatest AI files for each scenario.

I'm uncertain how the AI will react if you replace it mid-game, but if you're not getting a good game from it anyway, you might not have much to lose.

Also consider playing the scenario on at least 'hard', otherwise the AI can't keep up with island supply. The good news is you can change the difficulty at any time - some players even adopt an alternating 'x number of turns on regular, y number of turns on hard/very hard' strategy to keep the AI afloat in the logistics department. I just keep the difficulty on 'hard' in my games against the AI. I'd play a week or so of turns on 'hard' and see if that doesn't do the trick before poking around with the AI files.
