Phillipines

Post by IBender »

Attached is a picture of the phillipines (global war all options turned on)

I landed a force of troops (invasion by japan) in space marked A in red. I had considered 2 other places, B and C. I liked C because its 1 space from port. I liked B becuase its 2 spaces from port, but there are mountains in between.

In the end I selected the space next to letter A as I felt this was most threatening to the Americans and I hope I can either take Manila or the port north (Apari)

My question is...non of these do I really like...well I really like choice C, but that is far from Manila.

My question is what do you all consider a good landing place in the phillipines and why?

Thanks

A is best. Land based air support should be available and you can bypass the Philippine forces. With the other two, it will take too long to get to the prize - Manila.

Thank you....also can I confirm with you....Using all the optional rules...when I conducted the invasion ..the defender could use notional or could not ...choice was his. If he didnt use notional the fight was +21. He chose to use notional and the fight ended up being +12 Am I right that it is impossible (using all optional rules) for me to get a landing w/ surprise and get a +21 and automatically win? I thought I could get +21 / auto win when there is surprise but I havent seen that yet...or is the optional rules making it so there is always notional if the defender wants it?

Thanks

Well... there are a lot of depends there. Read the rule on notionals. Their value increases if the invaders are in a lower box than 3 (even more if the weather is not fine and there's a couple other conditions too, but they are not in play for your example.) Their value decreases if they are surprised or are out of supply. But they are units of their home country so, in this case they trace supply to any city in the Philippines, not to the USA.

And then there are terrain modifiers like -4 for jungle, but +1 for a white print JP unit and +1 for the notional. So most likely the notional was a 1 and the base odds were +14. But then down 4, up 2 for a net +12. A pretty dicey attack with only one unit.

Any time the base odds come out to something against zero, then it is indeed an automatic +21. If against one or more than you have to do the math.

I would invade on a surprise impulse with a division from the four box into the resource hex. This gives me the resource immediately; I can pick up Manila at my leisure. I find it interesting that the Americans have left MacArthur in the Philippines. I usually see him evacuated. If the Americans did leave him there, why isn't the Philippine TERR stacked with him? Manila and the resource are the only two points in the Philippines worth anything.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

This is what I do as well. And have the same questions about the TERR placement.

I leave Mac in the Philippines. I also put all my crappiest US subs in Manila.

I tend to evacuate Mac Arthur towards Pago Pago. I rather live to fight another day, than spend another 5 BP to rebuild him. But I can understand people who decide to fight over Manilla, trying to make life more difficult for the Japanese.
