Check LOS

Post by Chris21wen »

Although I purchased the game a while ago I've just sat down to give it some serious consideration. First it's ASL on a computer, that's good and for the most part the game looks good but for the 'Check LOS' button. How's the interface work? It's appallingly bad for a modern game with the inability to click the map to select a hex. You can't even hover over a hex to find out the co-ordinate I've had to write them down to use it. Now if there's a secret I'm missing I take it back. No help in the forum and nothing in the manual or readme changes.

Last bitch, all-be-it a smaller one. Having to hold the control key down to select multiple units! Must be a better way.

I am not sure about the first point, but holding the control key and gathering units with the mouse left button down input is a standard practice. How else would the program know you want a group select? A group select should not be the default behavior for the left mouse button down action. A tactical game requires more precise plotting.

You can click on a hex that has units in it. When you move your mouse over the battlefield map, in top right corner of the game screen will show information about the hex. Stuff like hex coordinates, terrain type, elevation, vpo and which side controls it.

That's how windows file explorer works for years, if you have 45 objects in a hex...how would you otherwise select items...given that I need to support 1024x768 resolution.

You could click on them without holding the Ctrl key down as you do in many other games.

Or drag a box around them.

I know how to find out what the coordinates are. The problem is using this information in conjunction with the LOS Check window. In the example the highlighted unit is in hex 6,15 and not 6,12 as shown. Why, well highlight the hex move the mouse to click the button and see what happens. No hotkey either so you don't have to move the mouse.

The second coordinate is impossible to find out with the LOS Check window open as hovering over the map does nothing.

Also, what does '0.00 seconds. Check_LOS_FOE[] executed: 0 time' means. Nothing in the manual, nothing in a whatsnew, nothing in the forum that I could find.

In many other games clicking a hex highlights visible hexes from it but usually only when you have a unit in the hex. If your not in the hex then you have to work it out for yourself. Perfectly acceptable. In this game you can carry out a LOS check from any hex provided you can find the coordinates that is.

I can live with the control key without going to that extreme. It's the other matter that is of major concern.
