Shortest GWAAR

Post by TeaLeaf »

Wanted to share this picture of German losses M/J '44. I knew Overlord and Dragoon at the same time combined with red army offensives can be brutal but never saw it displayed in a picture to be so spectacular [:D].

I guess this is what the player's notes in the scenarios booklet means when they say Allies don't despair if you don't gain much ground initially, when the breakpoint comes it's spectacular!

That are some serious German losses. Ouch.

What is even more surprising is that the Western Allies didn't suffer any losses.

Thank you for sharing. [&o] [:)]

Operation Bagration broke the back of the Wehrmacht for good.

The scroll bar probably has the Western losses off-screen.

Impressive. That must be something like 250 BP's losses for Germany.

Haven't counted the BPs of losses, but I'm not sure I'd survive such a calculation [:P].

Brian Brian got it right, scroll bar hides losses of western allies. I took a shot of those but be warned, it's hilarious [;)].

And Brian is right about Bagration as well, I guess:
Practically all of the aircraft were overrun by Red Army, and I think about 80% of the losses of land units came from the eastern front as well.

Germany choose to (try to, as it seems) match the build-up of Russians in the east and left Overlord and Dragoon opposed but marginally.

I'll post current situations in the west and east for Germany below.

If planes were overrun there are lots of dead pilots too...

M/J '44 in the East.
Germany looks strong, and to be honest, was only worried about its more or less weakly defended western front (that was expected to be opened very soon).

Allies won initiative. Russia played an OC (land action). The Red Army started by heavy artillery barrages and ground strikes. Air battles followed. Russian airlosses came from these battles. GS-results were underwhelming because of heavy German FTR resistance, but ARTs performed well. The Luftwaffe was now largely spent (about 60% I guess), however.
German Ground Support reduced the threat level of the Russian opening attacks, but an OC makes up for a bit and the Red Army at least destroyed a -few- German units and forced them to retreat.

With lots of German ground AND air units DG'ed, things went bad from the 2nd Russian impulse, when Stalin played a second OC in a land action and still had quite a few aircraft in reserve (or reorged by Zhukov and his first OC). Breakthroughs were mostly converted to retreats, unless large stacks of aircraft could be overrun (mostly during impulse 5 and 7).

Russia has played 4 offensive chits on Germany now (2 before in '43, which didn't deliver) and J/A will see another few. If needed >;).

And the situation after 5 Allied impulses with 2 Russian OC's.

Here is the situation in the West, at the start of M/J '44.
Note that German Units are still fleeing from Spain. German OKH feared the devastation the allies could wreak by landing both in western and southern France: complete Army Spain would be OOS.

Now the Allies invaded Calais, Boulogne, Rouen, Le Havre, St-Malo and Brest. Also rolled in from Spain and Northern Italy, accompanied by what I still call Dragoon.

USA started the first impulse with a super-combined and the second impulse (or third, I forgot) with an OC on a land action. The rest was simple; ground strikes (even a few carpet bombing raids), debark, race forward and attack only with very high modifiers to reduce the chance of becoming DG'd once the allied HQ's were spent.

Note that Gibraltar was also liberated in this turn (Yes, Spain was already Liberated but Gibraltar not yet).

Amazingly good guess! Not counting pilots or convoy points, there are exactly 250 points of German units there. Pilots will add considerably to that total, of course.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

[:D]

It was not a pure quess. I did some rough counting and estimated losses to be somewhere around 200-300.

But I will buy a ticket for a Eurojackpot!
