Terrain Effect Modifier Impact - Manual Page 93

Post by NewBobolix »

Good evening all and congrats to Peter for this gorgeous game... I have been waiting for this since 1993 (the year I discovered ASL, unfortunately I played very few times FtF and only in those years) and I read about TOTH only 1 week ago...buying it immediately [:)]

I have a problem understanding the TEM Impact as described at page 93 of the manual:

Terrain Effect Modifier Impact:
If a friendly personnel unit moves into a hex with none or low TEM
terrain hex and in LOS of enemy weapon with ROF, the enemy
personnel unit/weapon may only fire once against the friendly
personnel unit.
If a friendly personnel unit moves into a hex with a medium
TEM terrain hex and in LOS of enemy weapon with ROF, the enemy
personnel unit/weapon may only fire twice (assuming it passes its
ROF check, it can fire again) against the friendly personnel unit.
If a friendly personnel unit moves into a hex with a heavy TEM
terrain hex and in LOS of enemy weapon with ROF, the enemy
personnel unit/weapon may only fire three times (assuming it passes
its ROF check, it can fire again) against the friendly personnel unit.
Once a weapon (ROF capable) runs out of ROF, it may not fire again.

I do not understand how TEM impact ROF and the possibility to fire 1/2/3 times...

Thank You !

Welcome Roberto!

Example:

When an enemy AI squad moves in your movement segment into a woods hex (DEF = low) in LOS of your squad with an MG you can only fire with your MG only once against the AI squad; it doesn't matter if your MG keeps Rate of Fire or not.

Note: This also applies if the AI target hex has a terrain with DEF = None - example open ground/bridge/orchard etc.

If instead of woods terrain in the target hex would have say wooden rubble (DEF = medium) then assuming your MG would keep its rate of fire you can fire with your MG maximum twice against the AI squad.

If the target hex would have say stone building (DEF = high) then assuming your MG would keep its rate of fire you can fire with your MG maximum of three times against the AI squad.

I hope this helps ;)

Hey Peter, that's not the way ASL handles TEM. An MG can fire at the same hex at a maximum of MF expended on that hex. A building cost 2 MF to enter regardless of whether it's stone or wooden therefore the maximum times it can be fired upon by the same MG in the Defensive Fire Phase, with ROF, is 2 (2 MP expenditure). So you can fire with the first MF expenditure then fire again with the second MF expenditure in the same building hex or any hex that requires more than 1 MF to enter. Naturally, if it takes longer to move (MF's) in the LOS it just makes sense you have more opportunities to shoot. The slower you go (more MF's spent to enter a hex) the easier a target you are. But, then again, it's not ASL but TotH so that might explain the difference. It's still a good game.

Peter, thank you for the reply... I understood the mechanic but I failed to understand the reasons... I just realized that is the same in ASL just with different words...
Low TEM = 1 MF = 1 shot
Med TEM = 2 MF = 2 shots (rof permitting)
High TEM = 3 MF = 3 shots

Is this the right way to see it?
