Control over Facing

Post by kevos4 »

Is it really true that I have no control over the facing of my units, or am I missing something? Thanks.

true, the unit and it's commander has that control, same as who or what it fires at, you are just the overall commander, who tells them where to go, and sometimes they do even what they are told, but not always[:D]

page 21

you can move them in a given direction and leave them in a given direction, but overall in combat, of if a unit commander thinks otherwise, he can and will move and face elsewhere sometimes, this is war and makes it real

while you can leave it in a given direction, eg facing the enemy etc, once you end your turn and the AI takes over, the command goes over to the AI commander who can make it's own mind up, so while you give overall commands, the rest like facing and which target is abstract, strange at first, but works very well and for the the time, works quite well, as if you had perfect command, it wouldn't be a sim, just a normal game, this simulates the FOW and abstract forms of command, like you send a message, but it's upto the commander of the unit, not you to read it, understand it, and do it, and sometimes they do there own thing, not always, but it does happen

Image

also you can have the best commander of either side in command on a given unit, but if out of range, the unit isn't in command and depending on the given units ability and unit commander, as each unit has it's own, it can do some really strange stuff, so try to keep in range of there overall commander, as if you leave it to the unit commander, they may or may not have the full picture of what was wanted from you

while you have a unit selected, right click alters its facing / direction, but best to move it in the direction you wish it to go, just in case it makes it's own mind up and moves elsewhere and faces sometimes the wrong way

so a unit has MP, movement points to spend to move, but also it uses points to alter facing, so better to move and leave in the direction you wish the unit to fire it or at, hoping the unit commander doesn't alter you choice and fire at something else

each hex once you place you mouse in it has a MP cost, so best to move into it, and not just alter facing to it

so shows 10 left to move forward, 7 left to move / turn and move left and about turn would leave 2 MP left, as it's a massive task to move a line

so, make you mind up where you wish to go, and march / move in that direction, then at least your always facing forward, towards the other side, but if you get turned, you get flanked, but you can sometimes to a part turn if you have some MP left, so it depends on what stance your in, and what sort of unit you have also

Image

as shown, if i'm attacked now in the rear, i'll panic and run, and no points left to move to a side profile either, as that's less than a rear attack, still bad either way tbh, but yes sometimes no matter how good you plan, the unit commander on the ground, see's things differently, and can and does do it's own thing, you have a birds eye view, the commander on the ground doesn't so does the best he can and what ability he has also, so sometimes no matter what you do, if not in command or a poor commander in charge, not a lot goes to plan, that's life

Thanks for the quick response. I might feel better about it if I had seen a single example of one of my units changing facing except as a fixed, mechanical result of movement. That hasn't happened yet.

If we had a decent tutorial you wouldn't get these questions
But it won't happen with the amount of responses on this forum
Think this was the first for over a month

unit facing is unit movement, once a unit is selected, the only way to alter facing it to move the unit and spend MP.

once selected, moving a unit facing without leaving the same hex, can be done by right clicking on any hex around it, at the cost of MP.

all this is in the manual tbh

and i only reply to comments, i'm not the forum mod, i'm just a tester from the game and a normal member like yourself.

the game is very simple to play, and not that hard to learn, but with the mechanics in the game, hard to beat at times, without some hours put in, reading the manual, isn't something i've done, i may have skipped though a odd page while in testing the game some years ago, but no i haven't read it fully, or memorized it, i use it only as a guide when or if needed, like for this post above, to double check what i thought i knew.

i could comment on many things, and spam the threads and posts on all my game plays, but if no one else plays, seems rather pointless, and if the boards members don't play it, that's there loss, and like me and many others have said, there is no better game for the type or era done to date, if someone asks for something, there's always someone who's played it replies.
