Just my two cents worth: I am proud to be an American no matter what day of the year, or hour of the day it might be.

My father servied twice, first as a China Marine in the 1920's, then belatedly in the US Army in 1942, when the Marines refused to re-up him due to age on December 8, 1941. I served during peacetime, and am pleased to be ablel to say much of my active Army duty was with an eltie missile outfit.

We answered a call not for the high minded reasons some people push forward. It was a simple call to duty. Many of our families, friends and colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice. They did not go because of some idea of freeing oppressed peoples, not even of defeating certain foreigners, those ideas are way too fancy. As has been pointed out before, there was a reason the War Department commissioned Hollywood to produce the extensive series of short subjects entitled "Why We Fight". Put simply, many did not have the slightest idea.

The governing force behind all of it is a simple concept: Duty. These men and women understood their responsibilities. Almost all of them answered the call, some volunteered, most did not, it made no difference in the final analysis. They were there because they were supposed to be there, it was their job to fight the enemy, defeat the enemy, then return to civilian life.

The American professional military in 1940 was so small it is frightening to contemplate that with such a force we were going to take on two nations simultaneously whose military was tremendously powerful. But we did it, and there was only one way it could have happened: There were a few "draft dodgers". Very few. Some made sure they had defense prioirity technical skilles, therefore would not be called to active military duty.

Millions did not do this, nor did they attempt to evade their duty. They didn't go with the idea of dying for anyone. They went simply because it was the right thing to do.

We owe much of what we have today because of the sacrifices these men and women made. It is to them I dedicate my thoughts and prayers on this, our Independence Day.

Thank you for the opportunity to express these views. A lot of people died to make this kind of freedom of expression possible. I try never to forget that.

My 4th of July will be spent at home, with plenty of rock n roll and liquid refreshment to help celebrate America's hard-won and too-often-taken-for-granted freedom. Let's not forget the many long-since departed patriots whose sacrifices allow us to do this. > The girls are going to a cook-out at a friend's house, so I'll be able to hang out alone and rock away. Let the good times roll (popping open a cold one), and have a safe and joyous holiday, my friends.

To all those who served in WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold WAr, many thanks for preserving the freedomes that all we citizens of the Allied nations too often take for granted!

Happy 4th to all.....but...we....(my family) ..will be having it on the 5th..so to speak..due to work for us both....the kids will learn just the same....and...my fathers Birthday is the 5th also....so..they will learn alot....
