It seems it is the game's designer who has the nostalgic attachment to 1D10 (perhaps because the 2D10 was someone else's design) and that's why 2D10 is stated as the optional. But certainly there is a minority that prefer the 1D10 and I don't think it is for nostalgic reasons, it's just a preference. Getting insulted about which one you prefer is a bit over the top however.

There are several threads here discussing the pros and cons of the two, but you need to set the top filter to "all" rather than "last 365 days" to find them.

I would like to know why some players prefer 1d10 (or are resistant to playing 2d10).

When I started playing MWiF I definitely preferred 1D10. It was easier to understand how it worked, more similar to previous games I had played (like AH Third Reich) and made calculating the odds for combat results in your head easier. I still find it easier: with 2D10 I have to use an spreadsheet to know % chances of becoming disorganised or % of eliminating 1/2 units.

Although once I moved to 2D10 I didn't come back for its benefits, if I had to start a game with a newbie I think I would with 1D10.

I learnt with divs, 2d10, CVPs and all. Can't imagine the game without them. Right now we are playing a game with a friend who made us play without divs, CVPs, ..., and I hate it, to be true.

Thanks God we are at least using 3d10

To go back to the original post- as a newbie myself I played barbassos (not all the way through), and then I tried Guadalcanal but had the same experience- I just stared at all the pretty images on the screen and wondered - what the heck do I do? So I went and played GW. I recommend this - but feel free while learning to abandon.the current GW game as a learning experience. After a bit of GW (and learning some technical interfaces) I now "get" Guadalcanal... naval operations and invasions need to be absorbed but once you get the hang of them things start to fall in place.
The only optional rules so far I've "discarded" are carpet bombing (by forum consensus) and construction engineers.

Hello everybody.

I read all the message only this morning. After three weeks of holiday and a "human" first week of work with only 12 hours
a day, this week comes out as a "Normal" working one and I was forcet to the "nromal" 14+ hours a day and thus the impossibility to do anything trivial like boardgaming when back at home.
Neverlass today is saturday, i wake up early in the morining and managed to did some turns of my guadalcanal scenario.

First impressions:
without the help of the program I am lost.
I did not correctly grasp the real meaning of the suplly rules (I am playng with limited overeas supply)
The mechanics of naval movement and combat are absolutely not easy
I enjoyed mysel a lot!
Things seems improving after the difficoult start.

Just a small summary of the situation:
Japan conquered Port Moresby (why I setup lot of ground allied units in Australia and nothing there???)
On the burma theater everything stopped by lack of supply (I fired every suplly officer of the theater and promply
re-read the rules, especially the optional)
Did a lot of naval battles, essentially because I moved group of naval units around (without any ideas of what they are doing, I must say). Fun but very frustrating when the search rolls fails...
Time now to re-start from the beginning and a better strategy for both sides.

Regarding the developing discussion about optionals, I must say that beiing the "historicity better than playabilty" guy,
I tried to include a lot of them (divisions, all the air ones, amphipious etc). I only left out the oil, and some other more complicated ones.

Main difficoulty was having a clear idea of the theater (not knowing the game, of course) and what to do due to the limited size of the monitor.
Of course I used the different zoom levels and the pletora od marvellous tools the program has, but I missed a bit the maps and cardboard part.
I am now planning to play the scenario using MGWIF on the PC but having at least a part of the playing going on phisical map behind me.
Longer but more easy to undertand the options I have.

I have a lot of questions in my mind but before bothering you all with stupid ones, I prefer to try playing a bit more and later returning here
with remaining ones.
