Runtime errors
WITPAE used to be a model of stability. Now I get runtime errors to the point that the game is broken.
I tried downloading and installing the 2005 C++ but it didn't work.
Tried a fresh reinstall and that didn't work.
Tried frequent saves but it's corrupting the save games and won't load them.
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -d -altFont –multiaudio –dd_sw -cpu2 -dd_sw -px1920 -py1080 is the command line in the shortcut.
NVIDIA GeForce 770 4096 meg graphics.
Like I said, it used to run like a dream. Now I can't get it to work.
HELP!!

RE: Runtime errors
IIRC (not looking at any reference) -d says when playing vs AI make a backup save each day. No effect on PBM.ORIGINAL: MakeeLearn
What is -d?
-dd_sw is written twice.
What do the runtime errors report?

RE: Runtime errors
I thought -dd_sw was software based graphics switch? It turns off hardware accelerations iirc.
RE: Runtime errors
I am referring to just "-d", not "-dd_sw". Different switches.ORIGINAL: InfiniteMonkey

RE: Runtime errors
Thanks for the interest in my problem, everyone.
Updated command switches: "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -d -altFont -cpu2 -dd_sw -px1920 -py1080
I cleaned up the command line but the crashes continue. I used "Event Viewer" to generate more details.

The only mods I am using are map mods, mission screens and unit patches mods. No script-related mods. Message delays are the default settings. As I said in the OP, this game has never given me problems before- it may be the PC; it is a few years old and I had some issues with corrupted windows files and had to reinstall windows.

RE: Runtime errors
When do these crashes happen?
- While saving the game (both auto and manually)? I had a few of these and they always corrupt the save game, just like you mentioned. I always put it down to the self-rigged portable version I use and it happens only around once in 100 saves.
- While giving orders (what order/open windows)?
- During turn resolution (what phase?)
- Some or all of the above???
Thanks, Rafid

RE: Runtime errors
It varies.
Usually though when I'm clicking on a task force or air group- the sound cuts out (no 'click') noise then menus fail to open or close correctly and the game stops responding @ all. Then I get the runtime error dialog box.
It has crashed once during the turn resolution phase. But just once.

RE: Runtime errors
Exception code: 0x40000015
0x40000015 error code may be triggered by an incomplete installation of a particular software/update, incorrect uninstall, accidental removal or replacement of registries, and similar issues.
one possible cause is outdated or damaged antivirus.

RE: Runtime errors
One odd possible cause you might not think of. Long ago when I was running Windows Vista (bear in mind that most OS code does *not* change between releases, there is simply too much of it to re-write it all the time) I was using a wallpaper that showed a world map and changed throughout the day to show daylight versus night areas. I forget the interval - maybe 6 minutes? - anyhow most of the time when it changed and I was playing WITP nothing happened. But once in a while the game would crash for seemingly no reason. When I stopped using that desktop background I stopped having 'random' crashes.
The developers have mentioned that the game uses some older video technology and I mean that in the sense of the Windows system services that provide them. One developer mentioned that elsewhere (not WITP) he had been faced with an occasional, random type crash that they tracked down to that but for years they could not nail it down. It only went away when they stopped using that software - wrote or bought something newer and switched over to it.
Obviously AE works without crashing %99.9999.... of the time; the point is that there are issues in that technology that can be brought out in a particular hardware/software situation. So look at your desktop background and if you have anything fancy (anything more than a plain .jpg image/picture) then change it to either a .jpg image or one of Microsoft's built-in backgrounds.
Second in the same vein, what else is installed/running on the system? Think about everything you've installed and see if anything is running in the background. If so, turn it off and/or temporarily uninstall it (obviously save your data so it doesn't get lost).
Anti-virus: Certainly a possibility. People here have even recently seen problems during installation with one anti-virus or another causing problems, and have seen problems getting AE to run properly after installation because anti-virus misidentified it as a threat ("false-positive") and somehow interfered with it being fully/correctly installed.
You can try doing the installation and running AE without that same antivirus running or installed. Disconnect from the Internet first (unplug cable, turn off WiFi on a laptop/any system with WiFi).
It is possible that your disk is having problems or your system memory has errors and as a result some file was installed corrupted.
SpinRite (grc.com, about $90, via download) will check your disk like no other utility and often repair it (by causing the disks firmware to recognized bad areas it missed which need to be redirected to spare areas). If you have an external disk available then just as a test you could install to the external drive and see if AE runs without crashing from there.
Someone might correct this with better information, but I think memtest or a similar name (I don't have a link at the moment) will check your system's memory.
Both of those types of utilities boot separately.
I am no expert on reading the crash information you pasted but I don't see anything helpful except that (well, duh) it is AE that is crashing.
Back on anti-virus, if you try a different one then do a full scan on your system just to make sure that there is no stupid infection causing this.
Check that the graphics drivers are up to date. Check with both MS and on the manufacturer (NVIDIA) websites.
I don't see some basic information but I might have missed it in your posts.
What version of Windows?
Is the PC new?
What else changed about the same time this problem started? For example, new PC, OS upgrade, etc. Were you playing the game every day for years and this just started or did you just go back to it after a year or two or whatever time?

RE: Runtime errors
Ah, I see. I don't believe I had my antivirus disabled when I installed. I will try that.
That, and get the pc to the shop for a proper checkup and virus scan, I might have missed something.
It's a quadcore gaming rig, 1gb video ram, about three years old. I can play the Witcher 3 on high graphic setting with zero problems, to give you an idea of it's capabilities.
Thanks for your help, everyone.

RE: Runtime errors
ok, the HD I was using was 20% defragmented, fixed that.
disabled my AV program (bitdefender), reinstalled to the other HD and now it's working beautifully. Hopefully fixed.
Thanks, all.
