Help exchanging PBEM turns

Post by BillBrown »

I am playing in 4 PBEM games, two as Japan and two as the Allies.

In three of the games there is no problem exchanging turns.

In the fourth game, I am Japan, I can not get my opponents turn
to load. It starts to load, never gets to asking my password, and then bounces back to the main menu screeen with all but one button missing. I can ALT-TAB out, then go back and the main menu screen is fine. I have tried having him send the turn to a different mailbox with the same result.

Are there any other things we should try? Or is this a non-game for us?

There is one thing I can suggest - and it could be considered a no brainer:

Sometimes when I finish a turn - press end turn, I then accidently exit rather than save the turn (umm duh).

I then send the unsaved turn to my partner... He puts his password in (and since I have effectively made no changes, it actually requires my password) it figures it has the wrong password and dumps him back to the main menu screen.

The loss of buttons may mean I am way off the track - in fact it may just mean I have admitted to being lupie - but it's worth a go.

You can tell if this is the case as the date on his return mail should be the same as the one you sent away, it should advance a day if he saves his turn properly.

Nope, that is not it. I never get asked for a password. It appears like when it is about to ask for a password, it goes back to the main menu.

I think I've seen something similar

My IJN opps were having problems loading their turns as well when I moved my game to a new PC. My quick solution was to use my old PC for UV. I played around a couple of weekends ago by starting a PBM game with myself to see if I could recreate/fix the problem. I was able to recreate it and the screen behaviour sounds the same. My old PC is WinMe, new one is XP, but I played both sides on the XP machine so it does not seem to be a OS incompatibility issue. One thing I noticed is that it sometimes seems the very first file goes 'OK' but then the next one will not load. I may experiment one one of my new opps to see what happens. By the way, I don't think you need to cntl alt del out of the scrambled screen, just click the one button that shows up. This should bring you back to the normal load screen.

Anyone else seen anything like this? I suspect it's my email package on my new XP machine (outlook express) but that's the same package I use on my Me machine and all the settings seem the same. To further make it look like the email package, I can run a UV turn on the XP machine fine, save it to floppy, and send from my Me machine and then everything is fine.

Would love to the the XP machine working properly as it would save some combat with the wife.....

I'm using Win98SE. The only button( misplaced) takes me back to the load screen which then dumps me back to the messed up main menu screen. I just ALT-TAB to minimize the main menu screen then remaximize it and the screen is fine. But no matter what I can not get it to load.

We will probably start over since we had just started. I'll keep all files this time and then nothing bad will happen. :)
