A surprise strike on Magwe oil went swimmingly. Only 12 Nates were defending, and the three sweeping groups of Hurri IIb and Buffs took care of them before the bombers arrived. The 35 Marauders did their job, getting a total of 22 hit to the oil! Well done for rookie pilots on their first mission, all about 45 exp and 55-60 skill.
I'll be curious to see what actual damage this has done during the turn, if I have eyes on it next turn. I might have to recon later.
The question is, do I just reload and go again or is he going to move in 50 fighters and really try to protect the remaining oil?

Feb 22, 1942
The first day of bombing troop at Singers goes well. Not amazing results, but the fact that troops were CAPed over this base with its 120 fighters makes me happy. The Japanese groups included four landed groups from CVs as well as four Sentais of IJAAF planes. I'm wondering if some of these were even CAPing from Palembang. Altogether only 24 planes got up to contest so those groups must have been on partial LR CAP, or really depleted. Or both.
I'll be interested to see how much is left at Johore Baru tomorrow and if any CAP is up at Singers. He needs to get this base under control, but the MTBs, mines, subs CD guns and now CAs there to defend will make it that much harder, and from the air the Hurris and P-38s make sweeping a dubious choice. I have to start checking mine pools to see where I can draw form still. I want to save Soviet mines for their ports, but Dutch, British and US mines are all fair game for Singers and the straits. I think I'm out of the mines the Abdiel uses, but the subs might have some left for the RN and I know the USN subs can still mine. I need about 80-100 in the hex near Singers to be dropped at once and soon.
The bombardment at Singers is tough, and his arty is strong. We lose 10 and have 15 infantry squads disabled. Won't do that again, but it's nice to see what's here. I'll stick to air and sea bombardments from now on. [;)]

The IJA gives Wenchow a try, but it doesn't go well, even after a hundred or so bombers hit the base first. Not too concerned what happens here, but I'm happy it may take a while and potentially wear down three IJA divisions.

The first attack at Hailar takes the base. Too bad the division that was here left. In any case this will solidify the northern border area and bag another good 10k of IJA troops. I'll see if he decides to reinforce Anshan before moving there, but if he does that may leave other opportunities around the map here. The bases on the ends of rail lines are my first goals, though, so i'd like to get it.

In this case I had I think 8 Soviet subs (single boat TFs) in one hex and got four hits from four different subs.

That is correct. Arshaan. Sorry for the confusion. I'll get to Anshan later. [:D]

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J)
In the night RN cruisers find the IJN DDs near the Sumatran coast and engage, crossing the T. With 42% moonlight and this advantage, plus a huge advantage in gunnery, I'd have though we could get a better result. Somehow the Japanese got in a few shots and skedaddled.
IMHO not all that surprising. In February 1942 the IJN has a major advantage in Night-time surface combat, and the "E" class CL's are among the weakest in the Allied OOB. 9,000 yards is a fair distance for WWI-vintage guns.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Because most of these ships have seen extensive action they have good night experience. That was one of my goals in playing aggressively early in the DEI while there were still many bases to retreat to and fix up damaged ships. Once the CVs were in trouble the damage spiralled too often into sunk ships, but the ones that made have good night EXP. These two cruisers are about 55 and 61 night EXP, not quite Japanese, but good. Daytime they're both in the mid 60s.
So I do expect a lot!! I change out captains, watch EXP gain and try to generally put he best crews into action. I get that these are old and the guns aren't the best, but the IJN DDs here are also from the 20s, and small, with old guns. Just gotta catch them long enough to really engage.

The Silent services trade blows with the I-158 getting the better of the night phase, sinking two supply ships. Luckily no strikes on cruisers or CVs. Gotta get the good RN DDs into ASW mode here.

After that the Georgetown bombardment group makes a significant discovery; CA Ashigara, damaged and just sitting around in port. [X(]
I wonder how many other damaged IJN ships are spread around the map hidden away. I'd like to get a few 500 pounders onto this girl, but I'm sure now the base will be crawling with A6M. I've just moved some 4E to India to bomb the oil at Magwe. He seems a bit stretched, so maybe I can get in here, but it depends on how damaged the ship is currently. Now that Sabang is operable, I'll send recon up there to check it all out. Who knows what else I'll find.

Over Magwe Hurry IIb sweep and clear the air well. The Buffs do not, but the 15 B-26 get through unharmed and get 2 more oil hits. I'm moving three 4E groups to Calcutta to continue the process, and I'll bring the B-26 to Singers eventually, where they can hit troops and oil if opportunities arise.
For Magwe I'd like to not leave more than 25 oil producing. Then move back to wiping the rest of Djambi, and then another surprise coming to do some more big damage to the oil, I hope. [;)]

Another light hit on Singers troops and lots of IJ fighters knocked down. I can't imagine he'll be able to keep LR CAPing here, which means we can fly missions with impunity soon and keep a constant annoying level of disruption on the IJA troops.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J)
Feb 23, 1942
In the 111,43 hex, a x3 terrain IJA blocking position, troops are now in position for a big DA tomorrow. We have a 2387 - 640 AV ratio, which should be enough to force a 1:1 at least, if not a 2:1. The tanks and arty here are good an plentiful, but who knows the added fort levels of the border fortress.
Hailar troops are slowly whittled down and surrounded. In a few turns we'll be able to turn this army south. Since it's about 1/4 of the total IJA AV in Manchuria to start, it should be a serious threat and should force reserves to the front. The aim is to cut off troops on the NE side of Manchuria, to the East of Harbin near Heiho/Sunwu, and to take Tsitsar, threatening Harbin itself. This will leave the north somewhat vulnerable, but I'll leave about 3-4 divisions in the SE in strat mode on the rail in case the IJA make a move toward Mongolia. If the NE sector can be cleared it will shorten the front and prevent the easiest move to cut Soviet rail lines.
