Video problem? Cortana did it?

Post by spence »

All of a sudden the combat replay changed. While watching the replay Cortana decides it's time to ask what it can do for me so the game screen disappears and the Cortana screen appears. I don't ever use Cortana but the Windows guys have made it close to impossible to dispose of it.
Dismissing Cortana (just a click anywhere) the replay restarts but now although the little message window indicates hits there is no video of the hits. Anyways after the turn ended I didn't save but ended the program. Then, in both an AI game and a PBEM I see little black "windows" when I put the mouse on any unit. Sometimes the "window" has part of a unit screen in it. The window goes away when I actually click on the unit but it is annoying. I tried re-installing the game/updates/Beta and it doesn't go away.

Any way to return to normal that anybody knows of? (Any not too technical way to get rid of Cortana?}

Which version of Windows 10 do you have? Home, Pro, enterprise?

Home I think. Came on the computer when new: not an "upgrade' from any other Windows version.

Unfortunately, to remove Cortana from a windows 10 Home version requires you to do a registry edit, not a process for the non technical.

Here is a link on how to remove it: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3109900 ... ricky.html

I never found out whether or not Cortana did it nor did I dare to try to get rid of Cortana permanently. What I did do was to remember to restore the switches I had put into the command line after I had re-installed WitP:AE. That seemed to fix all the problems I had following the initial change (which Cortana may have caused). Thanx to those who tried to help.

I had a Windows 10 update today. Now I am having similar issues to spence.

In the replay, where the phases of the turn are displayed on a black background, the desktop picture shows in that spot when the message goes away. This isn't a big deal in the replay, but it alerted me that something was different.

When doing a turn, when I hover over a base and see the base detail popup on the map, it shows, then when I move the mouse away from the base, the area where the popup was is now a box with the desktop picture showing through the map.

Also, when I tried to screen capture this, the capture was of the whole desktop, and none of the game. As if the game wasn't really displayed.

I haven't made any changes, other than the automatic Windows 10 update (which was a big update) that installed this morning. I checked my command lines settings and they are unchanged.

[edit: My command line settings are : "C:\Matrix Games\Aurorus\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -px1920 -py1080 -dd_sw -deepColor -SingleCpuOrders

Yeah, I have found Cortana to be causing some of the screen interrupts on the Windows keeps popping thread, a few down from this one. It's damned annoying.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I am going to repost in a separate thread. My issue is probably related to the update.

etymology: Cortana from the ML root cor heart + ML tana fit, attack; see tantrum.
