On the day in the air we did fare better but losses are light over Palembang. Those defenders could be wearing down though after many days of battling.

The situation is complex around Palembang. I've got around 15 subs in the approaches and near Singers, plus another 20 in the straits, and there are increasing numbers of combat ships at Merak and Batavia under the Allied CAP. Now the RN is sending in the old lady, with 3 "R-class" BBs escorting a troop and a transport supply TF down the straits to Singers. They pass Sabang unharmed and make it halfway with no interference. This should signal all out activity and red alerts all over the Japanese position, so we're planning for the worst. Other TFs will attempt to race to Singers to defend the shipment and support the base. A follow on set of transports will attempt to round Sabang in a few days while eyes are turned to Singers and Palembang.

The mini-KB is lurking at Pontiniak and subs will shift to hunt near singkawang for the CVs and the Takao. Any wounded here have a ways to go for Japan, so Saigon and Hong Kong will be monitored. Lowpe is good at stashing these ships for later it seems until things quiet down, as several have just disappeared over the past few months. All subs near the HI will shift to guard approaches to repair yards in the next week.

Having a mini-KB here is daunting in terms of trying to bombard Palembang. I don't want to get hung out to dry. Also, a strike could be sent at any time that would challenge the CAP of Java and hit the SCTFs as they wait. I have three more fighter groups moving from OZ and a few also withdrawing. There should be enough around as all Allied groups update to new airframes, including the new Hurris and P-40Es for the Dutch.

Int Indian division has been 3/4 unloaded at Oosthaven, so we're getting ready to move forward, and the Indian tanks should reach Praebemolih on the 11th. In a few days an Aussie brigade will be in position to move into Palembang or take Djambi. I think I'll need to destroy the rest of Djabi's oil before taking the base though, in case I can't hold it all.

This is kind of funny and kind of tragic. A wounded Takao is found and hunted by three subs in one hex and another in the next over. They shoot 16 torpedoes, which all miss. [:(]

Finally O24 comes in again two hexes away from it's first attack and fires off another 4 fish, this time getting one hit!! [&o] That's twenty for one hit. Not good odds here, especially for a slowed up ship in only 32% moonlight. I'll take it though. Hopefully it'll slow her enough to get another shot tomorrow or in the days to come.

Meanwhile the IJN sent in another TF, most likely hunting stragglers from yesterday's battles, and this time the tables turn! [;)] The Myoko engages 4 RN CLs and 3 DDs with her 3 DD escort, but the Allies get the best of it after she eats a torpedo fro the Achilles as the battle got down to 4k and then 2k yards. The swarming subs hit pay dirt this time and the Myoko is surely a goner. I wasn't listening unfortunately, and can't remember if any float planes were lost on the ground. Have to go back and check the saved turn.

Either way, it's a great result, finally, agains the CAs. Now some free movement of ships can happen to Singers and the RN CAs will make a run tomorrow.

Up North zeros clear out Alexandrovsk and Bettys follow hitting two Soviet DDs. Nothing sinks luckily, but they'll have to shift out.

The IJAAF is also active and sends in over 60 Sallys to hit the 3 divisions moving on Kiamuze in a clear hex. Soviet 75mm AA does very well, and losses are minimal.

Near Heiho our bombers work on the fortress hex and get a few more disabled.

BBs can't make it to Palembang. Only CAs and smaller. Wish they could!

We're also eating up those heavy guns. If we do push this contingent back those little units could even be destroyed. If they do fall back into the clear it'll be a good opportunity to get the bombers active as well.

A much quieter turn on the 12th. The I-165 goes nuts on AO Guadaloupe at Cocos Island. I'd tried to sneak her in here to support ships out of air range. Too bad.

The S-41 gets a PB near the tip of Borneo. Lots of shipping around here, and I think he's using Singkawang to replenish ships. I'll eventually send the 4Es here, but first things first.

Pike hits an xAK, the Kozui Maru, with gunfire on the surface, but after three unsuccessful torpedo volleys, decides to submerge due to 2 hits from the merchant. She landed 5 4in shots, so hopefully that means the ship is not doing well regardless.

We couldn't track down the mini-KB, which ends up at Kuching. More chasing tomorrow. [:)]

The RN CAs run to Singers and on the way trample DD Asagiri. Another good modern DD sunk for the IJN. I like it! These CAs will try to shave off some system damage in preparation for a run to Palembang. I need all cruisers available for this one. The DMS are close now. I'm not sure exactly how to set this up, but I think I'll have a four ship minesweeping TF with the DMS and two DDs, then have two CL TFs, two CA TFs, and a BB to cover the approach on the lookout for more big IJN cruisers or BBs.

In the day phase the Indian tanks take Paebemoelih. So Palembang is becoming surrounded. I'll shift them around to the North to avoid having to shock over into the base.

The most important event of the day doesn't show up in the combat reports, though. Troops and supply made it to Singers!!! [8D][&o]

This means another two months (probably) of supply and another 100 AV brigade to stave off the massive IJA stack building up here. I've never imagined this could actually work but with all of the sacrifices here, Singapore will hold a while longer. It's going to be a bear, and I hope this means I'll also be able to squeeze Palembang.

It's a good day on the ground up North as the Soviets grind away at the border fort near Heiho, getting a 1:1 and more importantly, somehow getting two divisions and lots of arty over the river without a shock attack. Happy about that, as I've got time, and I'd just like to crunch for a few days to get the most troops disabled as possible before pushing them back with massive losses. [:)]

This just happened South of Hailar. The big stack finally dislodges the 14th division and arty units, and we get that massive haul of over 250 devices destroyed as well as a bunch more disabled. This division and company will now be sitting helpless in the clear for the foreseeable future. A few small arty units do not retreat, so we might have a chance to completely wipe them out tomorrow.

The best result is the 3 divisions at Kiamuze taking the base on the first attack and causing 150+ devices destroyed and another 150+ disabled. The base had forts 3 but the initial attack came in at 8 to 1!! [&o] This is an experienced bunch. Now if we can walk past and sneak into the next hex to take it too, a pocket will again be created. I'll post maps soon. The IJA is walking into a wooded, non-road hex, so our tanks can also speed past once they're all in it and get to the front quickly. This is looking good for the Red Army, and I can't imagine Japan has a lot of reserves at this point to send to all three of these areas that are in trouble. [:)]

In the night a number of sub interactions around Borneo give me the feeling he's aware the hunt is on and has sent out numerous ASW TFs. I'll pull back the subset a few hexes off the coast now. I'm not picking anything up in night search in the area either, and it seems like he may have stashed the Takao (and Myoko if she made it that far, but I doubt it with 4 fish in her belly). I wish recon flew this far.

in the day Netties strike in the straits and take out an xAK and put a torp in CLAA Van Heemskerck. The ship has 50 float and some decent engine damage, but her systems are okay, so I'll rush her to Singers. The Netties flew in at 26k it looks like, so a good number got through LR CAP to drop. Still wiped out half of them though.

The Japanese try a daring raid on Nikolaevsk. We'd recently moved out the CAP there, but had 2 fleeing DDs in port. Thy were hit by 44 Bettys from Hokkaido. Luckily most of the hits were the 60kg bombs. The Resvyj did take a 250kg shot, and is on fire. Hope the port can put it out, but no Naval Support here or any way to get it here.

Worked on a para unit stranded in the swamps in near Fuchin. It's nearly a goner.

Near Heiho we got a 1:1 but should break through soon. South of Hailar one of the arty units is crushed and retreats but the other stays put! Sillyness. I'll shock tomorrow with one unit and that should do it.

The map below shows some of the detail of the three areas we're pushing in. The bombing is trying to hit the troops moving from Tunghu to rush into the hex South of Kiamuze following our capture of that base. The hex lists 6k right now, but he is good at filing gaps, so we'll see.

The night of the 14th opens with the IJN sending out the ASW to punish the subs around Palembang. A few take coupe of glancing blows, but nothing definitive. These are the easy days for the Allied Silent Service, even though the torpedoes are questionable, the IJN ASW is abysmal and the air crews are only just getting trained up.

I let the RN BBs off the leash to bombard IJA troops at Singers. Not much damage, but if I keep it up it could have a decent effect. I tried setting the ships to hit Khota Baru, but now that the troops have crossed that channel is closed to us. Odd considering the ground troops moved over a causeway, but did nothing to the channel BBs navigate. I can't think of any other hex no the map where land ownership or movement would affect ship capabilities. Having been to Singapore it's pretty ridiculous. The harbour is continuous and arcs around the city, so the BBs would just move a bit closer into range and fire away, just as they did before the crossing. Oh, well.

The 15th may end up being a decisive turn for this campaign. This is the turn the Allies begin to work at shutting down Palembang.

The night starts with some of the smallest ships ni the game doing some critical work. Two Dutch AMc clear a minefield at Toboali just before several TFs move through on the way to Palembang.

The Royal Sovereign TF moves through and into the narrow straits toward Palembang and runs into four IJN DDs in 3% moonlight, a sure recipe for long lance mayhem! Luckily all salvoes miss, and RS plants a big shell on little DD Karii, setting fires and leaving her with heavy damage before the IJN withdraws.

Another IJN 2 DD TF shows up in the same hex and this time starts the battle at 1k yards. After avoiding a hail of lances moments before the RS isn't so lucky this time, eating one torpedo from DD Fuyo. [:(] No damage messages though.

Next the Natsugumo and Yanagi reappear (while DD Samidare apparently escorts DD Karii back to port) and surprise the RS TF. The Allies still manage to avoid all salvoes and land two smaller caliber shots on the IJN DDs.

After this the USN CAs arrive to engage Fuyo and Kuretake at 1k yards again. Only 1 hit this engagement.

At Palembang the minesweepers engage a DD and TB, with Stuart taking a smaller old torpedo. She might even make it after this one. The Minesweepers fail in their mission though, which give me the jitters about upcoming actions. This same little TF then engages both the RN and USN CAs, with both ships eventually being sunk.

Finally the cruisers hit Palembang, and both do the Allies proud. They plan a good shot on the airfields but also take a chunk out of the ground troops there, likely giving the support troops, engineers and AS low morale and high fatigue and disruption. All good!!

They also find CL Natori with one 8inch shell, which is positive. [:)] The cruisers then sink 3 xAK in hex.

After this the MTBs arrive and hit the minefield, which is good! They also run into three more xAK, big ones, and plant one TT on them before taking shots themselves. All are eventually sunk by the many DD still wandering the area.
