Breaking the 1940 El-Alamein wall

Post by WingedIncubus »

In some PBEM I play as Axis, instead of defending the Egyptian border, one tactic I see the Allied player adopt is staying in the rear to occupy the three hexes just beyond the Qattara depression with its Defence Force, right beside its supply sources. Since it takes two to three turns for Italian troops to reach that defence line, the British have time to entrench themselves, and with no possible flanking space.

It becomes, in effect, an unbreakable wall. And with further Event replacements it becomes progressively even more impassable.

While I understand its merits, isn't it a bit - well - gamey, especially in early 1940? The wall is nigh-on impassable and I struggle to find a decent plan to counter it on the short term. I tried to send a tank force around the Depression but they end up out of morale and supply really fast.

Do you have some advice or ideas? Thanks!

Perhaps you could bring in more bombers to punch a hole in the wall.

A quick Italian naval landing behind Allied lines is usually successful.

Unlikely to work vs. a human player...

I have done it 3 times against a human opponent & got away with it.....its all in the timing & where you land. Also had 2 failures!

Extra Bombers and the Artillery unit in the DAK can remove entrenchment pretty quickly. That being said, the Allied defense you described is exactly the way I usually defend Egypt. To defeat this, I've found I need extra bombers as the Axis.
