In FOG2, the AI is focused to defeat the enemy army by broken enemy units.
In TOTH, the AI is focused to hold or conquer victory points.
FOG2 AI does better than AI TOTH at the moment!
But let's not forget that it took 3 games (FOG1, Pike & Shot, Sengoku jidai) in Slitherine to get this result!

Now, I dunno that it took all 3. Pike n Shot and Senggoku were already good. FOG2 is just new and appears better than those two, but, the more I play I'm seeing weakness even in FOG2's ai.

FOG1 I'll give you; very bad ai and no challenge what so ever. My 6 year old nephew could beat it with his eyes closed. [:D]

Main concern here is does this game have more difficulty levels and do they scale well enough to be called difficult?

The difficulty level of the game is to be randomly deprived each turn of the activation of certain units of the player. I do not use this level of difficulty because there is no political commissioner to reactivate them.[:D]
For me, the difficulty of the game is in the scenarios.
It is in the positioning of defending troops.
It is in the positioning of the attacking troops.
It is at the beginning of a scenario when the attacking player does not know what he has in front of him or where.
And then, when he re-plays the scenario that he lost or he first played the defender-side scenario to know the location of the enemy units. He must have a little luck, because in TOTH a unit of recruits can, after a happy shot, annihilate an elite unit.
This game will not seduce you by its AI but by the intensity of the emotions it arouses.[&o][&o][&o]

SO BUY IT!!![;)]

Defeating enemy army first before capturing victory points is a good strategy.
Thus, I am not surprised by your conclusion about FOG2
Chancellor Gorkon to Captain James T. Kirk:
You don't trust me, do you? I don't blame you. If there is to be a brave new world, our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it.

I would rather an AI focus on units than focus on objectives. That is what is wrong with a lot of games is the ai rushing or coming out of great defenses to take an objective that they cannot hold;Combat Mission is bad about this. Field of Glory II ai goes for the units and tries to block them and rout them. This is what I like to see in an ai. You've basically told me this game doesn't have it so, therefore I don't want it now.

Thanks for the info though. Not dissing it; just not my cup of tea when it comes to AI play.

There a lot you can do with the AI in the Combat Mission Editor, but it does take work. It can be told to go after specific units or objectives or a lot of other options. They've added some new stuff as well.

However, the number of custom scenarios coming out has decreased a lot from the old days. And if you're programming the AI yourself, well then no surprises when you play the scenario!
