Use WASD for map movement?

Post by Shadrach »

These days, using WASD for map movement is pretty much de-facto standard, so kind of surprised the game uses only the arrow keys.

Having to move the left hand away from the left side of the keyboard to move the map is very impractical. Is there a way to override the keys?
It appears they are set to Air report and Weather report - surely these less-used dialogs can be set Shifted to free up WASD for map movement?

(I know also uses mouse but I never use it for movement - on multi-monitor setups the mouse just ends up outside the window and on the next screen more often than not)

In TOAW III you could also use the numpad (I guess that`s also true for IV), but also is in the righ side of the keyboard...

Not agreeing or disagreeing with your complaint, just wanted to point out that I have been computer wargaming since Commodore 64 and don't recall ever having used WASD.

Also all of WASD keys are being used as shorcuts in TOAW for a long time... changing them would not be a popular choice for long timers [:)]

Guys, the buttons are used for W=Weather overlay, A=Air report. S and D are not used AFAIK. So certainly the keys can be set to Shift or Control to bring up these reports.

I've also played wargames since the 80s, but I think the thing with using WASD started in the 90s with of course the shooters, then to RTS games like Warcraft and Starcraft. Basically "everyone" got used to it for movement and scrolling a map. Moving your hand to the right of the keyboard to move the map is not comfortable (unless the game is keyboard-only).

So you are stuck with clunky controls like moving the mouse to the edge of the screen, which is really fiddly and breaks on multi-monitor.

Anyway, I'm sure I can find some software for my keyboard to override these keys on a per-game basis.

Now if only the game had an option to change the keys yourself, wow wouldn't that be something [:D]

In that case you may want to try this software:
https://autohotkey.com
I haven't tried it for TOAWIV but it serves me good for other games(HPS & JTS games for example).

WASD are typically not used for hex based war games. Some of the more simple ones like Order of Battle use them but the vast majority do not. I don't have a problem looking at the keyboard to move my hand to a different locations. I don't see a problem. It might be the only exercise I get for a couple of hours. [:D]
