Are HVPs the same thing as railguns?

Command: Chains of War is a DLC for Command: Modern Operations. 20 minutes into the future, a spark erupts in the Korean peninsula that will lead to a theaterwide conflagration embroiling the entire Western Pacific and drag all major powers into it.

Are HVPs the same thing as railguns?

Post by JonBea »

I just recently got a copy of Chains of War and I've been playing around with the 155mm AGS HVP on the Zumwalt class. Already the advantages are obvious, but there's a bit of confusion. Some things I've been reading treat HVPs and railguns as distinct systems whereas others seem to suggest HVPs are just the munition a railgun uses.

Also I've been reading about ranges of over 100 miles and speeds of mach 6 or 7 for railguns, while the 155m AGS HVP has a range of about 70 nautical miles and a speed of mach 2 or 3 from what I can gather.

Okay, after a bit of additional research, this is how I understand it. While the HVP is indeed the round used by railguns, the 155mm AGS is NOT a railgun, hence the speed of mach 3. Question is then, if there's an actual railgun in the database, where can I find it?

Hi,

There is no mount that is specifically a railgun. Mounts obtain their "weapon type" properties by the types of weapons that are attached to them. So when you add gun rounds to a mount it becomes a gun, if you add missiles it becomes a missile launcher (and in some cases both, e.g. Tunguska or T-80 tank) and so on.

HVPs are essentially scaled-down versions of full-development railgun rounds. See a CRS report describing their respective development paths: https://fas.org/sgp/crs/weapons/R44175.pdf

The DB3000 does not currently include the future "full" railgun rounds as these are still currently highly experimental and speculative. HVP rounds in comparison are on a seemingly much faster track to operational service. The simulation mechanics are the same (they are both treated as "guided projectile" weapon types, along with some other in-service weapons like the 76mm DART round), so once the weapon reaches maturity we can include it without further code changes.

Thanks!

Thanks, that clears it up I think. I appreciate how engaged with the community you guys from the dev team are by the way.

I do have a few suggestions if you're interested. One thing I'd like to be able to use is some kind of line of sight tool for checking radar coverage, etc. Possibly a few more hot keys and/or the option for players to change them. Personally, I could use a hotkey to switch between sides since I'm constantly doing it in little test scenarios. Another thing - this might already be covered in the comms disruption/jamming, I haven't really had chance to look at it in detail yet - but something like a GPS jammer that would affect navigation and guidance systems?

Hi JonBea

In game open the help menu and select hotkeys. There you find a complete list of hot keys.
Alt+S switches side.

Hope this was what you were looking for.
