Request: Shortcuts for panel buttons?

Post by Shadrach »

Hi, I know I've talked about this another thread, just wanted to make it more "official" and make the request.

May we please have keyboard shortcuts for all the sub-buttons on the panels? There's a lot of clicking in the game, and trying to hit the correct buttons is hard enough, sometimes it doesn't register properly.

I'm thinking of the button rows like this:

My idea is to use the numbers row for this, 1-5 probably enough? So they would be from left to right, 1,2,3,4,5 and so on. It would be a huge time-saver when looking at the Battle Report and all its sub-panels for instance, there's a lot.

I know they are assigned to (from KeyCommands.txt): "1-9 Selects that entry on a dialog that has the entries above each other."
But haven't seen any panel where this applies?

Ideally the Exit button should always be the far-right one for consistency - and probably doesn't need a hotkey anyway, since ESC should do the job to close the panel hopefully in all cases.

I know the devs have plenty on their hands at the moment, but hopefully they see this and can at least add it to their list for some future patch.

I can assign keys on an individual basis, so that's possible. Some of those already have shortcut keys, typically the F for Formation and O for OOB. I can assign multiple hotkeys though so that should be possible.

Mostly the close button is to the right. I should review them to see if where I put them makes sense. A few like the one with the left/right arrow are less clear that to the right is the correct position. The editor also adds additional buttons and I generally ignored the rule when I needed to add additional buttons, I felt it was better to leave the layout alone.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah - making things a little more consistent would help a lot [:)]

I noticed now that the 1-3 keys are used for dialogs like End Turn (you did mention this, I forgot) and Quit. However, I don't think there's something stopping the numbers being used in other dialogs I think, as they are not global hotkeys.
