giving my units to AI

Post by gliz2 »

Hallo,
my fingers itching to press buy but as a TOAOW3 player one thing holds me back:
Is it possible to give control over some of my units to AI and if so how does it works in practice?

I have played extensively Fire in the East and Directive 21 and shuffeling hundreds of units was the one single most time-water ever.

Yes you can and it works well. You basically turn on Elmer and uncheck a box for the formations you want to control and you can also set objectives for the Elmer controlled units. I spent time having Elmer control all my units and setting objectives and doing attacks then letting Elmer take back over. I'd show some screenshots but I'm at work. It works well and it will be well used by me in the larger scenarios.

Can you use it to marshal forces? in FITE for instance if I have a unit spread about or arriving from reserve can I let the AI handle it and get them formed up at a point?

The only issue might be that AI control is at the formation level. You control formation objectives and stances, you can't control individual unit AI.

I haven't experimented to that level yet. Maybe Ralph will get a moment to chime in on what's possible or not with Elmer. I have some questions also, will Elmer grind units down or pull them out to recover? If you set an objective and parameters for a until to defend and then switch it to Elmer will it change the parameters? Will Elmer use support units to help itself i.e. planes and non attached arty.I will be doing some more experimenting.I don't expect a whole lot from Elmer, attacking, securing objectives and defending objectives, just some basics done somewhat competently to lessen my load in the larger scenarios.

I was more thinking for formations I want to leave for a while while the units arrive so that might work

It's supposed to leave 1/3 back in some cases, but I haven't had time to sit down and make sure it actually does, and under what conditions. Elmer will call in support in some cases. His biggest problem is prioritizing. I think he does fairly well tactically, but he has no idea of the big picture, which attacks are more important, etc. He also has code that understands fronts and how to spread out in a line perpendicular to the line of advance, being flanked and a whole lot of other things.

As long as you don't expect too much, he does fairly well.

AI is pretty decen I must say. Does decent job on a limited scale. Good for tertiary objectives or defending.
