Questions re Editor

Post by 76mm »

I've been playing around with the editor and have a few questions:

1) I've been looking at the naval stuff, and there does not seem to be a basic transport ship either in the basic database or in the FITE2 DB. There is a "River Transport" but no sea transport--seems like an odd omission, is there some reason for it?

2) Also in the naval stuff, I noticed that there were no MTBs, so thought I would add them. Using spare slots in the Equipment file, I created one German MTB (S-Boot) and one Soviet MTB (G-5). I have both of them the same characteristics, and the same silhouette and 3D Image. But the weird thing is that when I try to place them, I can place the S-Boot in any hex, but the G-5 (with the same characteristics) I can only place on rivers, as if it were a "riverine movement" unit (it is not, I checked). Why are these two identical units treated differently?

3) I created some straight inf units with no motorized transport. But when I started testing the scenario, I saw that in their units reports, some units were noted as having "Motorized Movement" or "Mixed Movement" as a Special Ability. Where did the motorized movement capability come from??

4) While generally think that the GUI is a vast improvement over TOAWIII, one of the places that needed it most did not get any love--why is there no scroll bar in the Force Editor, and we have to click dozens of times to get through the lists of equipment? It drives me crazy. From the manual it appears that part or all of the Force Editor is being incorporated into the Deployment Editor-will we be able to access the in-game Equipment Editor from there as well?

5) How do designers handle recon aircraft in the game? Differing levels of Theater Reconnaissance Ability? How does that work, from what I could see there is only a mention of it in the Event Editor section of the manual.

1&2] No idea.
3] I believe that the categories are determined by the movement rate of the unit.
4] In the Editor, hit 'U' and you will have scroll bars.
5] Differing levels of Theater Reconnaissance Ability? YES.

There may be a ship called a "river transport", but it won't "transport" anything. That ability has not been created yet.
Riverine status is determined by the unit icon. You probably picked the riverine icon by mistake.
3) I created some straight inf units with no motorized transport. But when I started testing the scenario, I saw that in their units reports, some units were noted as having "Motorized Movement" or "Mixed Movement" as a Special Ability. Where did the motorized movement capability come from??

You must have some motorized equipment in there.
4) While generally think that the GUI is a vast improvement over TOAWIII, one of the places that needed it most did not get any love--why is there no scroll bar in the Force Editor, and we have to click dozens of times to get through the lists of equipment? The legacy force editor is going to be replaced - any work done on it would have been a waste. The Unit Report has a lot of the functions of that editor already. It has a scroll bar, among other improvements.
5) How do designers handle recon aircraft in the game? Differing levels of Theater Reconnaissance Ability? How does that work, from what I could see there is only a mention of it in the Event Editor section of the manual.

No recon or transport aircraft ability yet.

1&2] No idea.
I figured out #2--duh--I was using the wrong icon again--for the S-Boot I was using the Light Naval icon, for the G-5 I was using the Riverine icon...it has taken me a while to get through my head that the icon determines unit abilities and is not just a graphic representation...

Strange...the inf squads are marked as slow, and I chose straight leg infantry, not motorized. Maybe they are sucking the trucks out of one of the other units. I will look to see if they are motorized on the first turn of the scenario.

4] In the Editor, hit 'U' and you will have scroll bars.

Aargh, you got me all excited, but it didn't work. In the Force Editor, hitting 'U' had no effect for me--no scroll bars. Scroll bars are desperately needed in my view in the "Available Systems" Screen.

5] Does enemy air superiority automatically reduce my Theater Recon Ability, or would I need to create an event for that? I haven't seen much about TRA in the manual but will try to search the pdf to see what comes up.

I swear - Open Editor > Open Scenario > Select a Unit > Hit 'U' > See below, this is what I get, and its been this way for over two years.

As you can see, the unit equipment and Available Systems both have scroll bars.

No, the TRA is a static feature, only changeable in the Editor.

If there is any type of motorized equipment in a unit it could be considered motorized or mixed.

Thanks, yeah I've seen that, but I don't seem to be able to access the Equipment Editor from there, and right now I am looking at the units in the equipment editor to figure out what is going on (or try to). As far as I can tell, I can only open the in game equipment editor via the Available Systems screen of the Force Editor.

First, I have to say that generally the editor is much more usable in IV--just having the right click menu in the Event Editor is a massive improvement.

Anyway, I've spent most of the day messing around with the editor, and there is one thing I really don't understand: how movement "special abilities" are determined. Let me give three examples:
1) I created a small infantry unit ("1st Infantry") with three infantry squads, which have the "slow movement" and "infantry" characteristics. In its Special Abilities, 1st Infantry has "Mixed Movement"--what is Mixed Movement, and why does it have it?
2) Same scenario as above, but instead of infantry, I picked two MGs and put them into a "1st MG" unit. It has "Foot Movement" as a Special Ability. Why does this have Foot Movement when my Inf has "Mixed"?
3) I created Mortar, Inf Gun, and AT units with 3 weapons and 3 horse teams each, expecting that they would have move with the horse rates, but all of these units have "Foot Movement" rates as a Special Ability. Is the foot movement rate the same as the horse movement rate? If not, why do these units have Foot Movement?

But there was no motorized equipment anywhere in the unit, or even the formation. A few horse teams to pull AT guns, etc., but the only trucks in the whole force are a few trucks in a HQ in a different formation. And the inf squads--the sole equipment types in the unit--have the "slow" and "infantry" characteristics, not motorized.

Email us the .sce or .oob to have a look. Remember, always the most dominant equipment will determine (on top of the special capabilities icon) what special rules for combat, movement, etc. applies.

I understand the general principal but don't understand how I get "Mixed Movement" (or even what it is) when a unit has an Infantry icon with only leg infantry in it.

In your example (see email); most units in got slow movement/airborne movement; hence, it is mixed.
