Unit/Counter Strength

Post by goodwoodrw »

I really don't understand unit strength, or the formula. For example a US division (7-5)might around 250inf squads + some miscellaneous squads Eng AT etc etc, but a soviet squad may have 500 + inf squads and supporting units, but only have a counter strength of 5-4. What is the formula. I may be confused the manual the strength (I guess the numbers displayed on the counter) is the total strength X by morale. Clear as mud. anyone prepared to give a simple explanation

I'll let someone else give the exact formula, but the Anti-personel and Anti-Tank strengths come from the equipment as you state, plus proficiency, plus readiness, plus supply, plus etc.

You will see the numbers go up and down as these multiple states constantly change during a scenario. Its one of the really great things about TOAW I like, the showing of AP and AT based on current status, including entrenchment level, supply, etc. Very helpful, don't have to look at fixed numbers based on equipment and amount only and then try to calculate it myself, the "true" state of unit is displayed at all times. Marvelous.

Has been my experience not to take it literally though, it is an estimate, though a good one. However, numbers and type of equipment do have a significant impact, just don't expect too much from those hungry and tired counters.

goodwoodrw,

Units strengths are scaled on a relative basis per scenario, based on the weakest unit in that scenario. Every scenario is different.

However, as a general guideline, unit proficiencies are frequently the most important values to look at. A unit with low proficiency will attempt to break off combat much sooner than a unit with a high proficiency regardless of raw unit strengths.

This is a game of layered complexity. Raw unit strengths are merely a starting point and veteran players are aware of literally dozens of "hidden" factors that can modify those raw unit strengths.
