Soviets and smoke

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Soviets and smoke

Post by ivanov »

This was discussed long time ago but I just want to make sure: is there any use at all of the smoke for the Soviets? All NATO armies use the thermal imaging, so they can see through the smoke. But is there maybe some partial cover that the Soviets may gain from using the smoke?

As the things stand now, smoke is probably the most effective NATO asset, that allows the units become completely stealth for a while. In the future I'd like to see the effects of the smoke less absolute. It should provide the Soviets with some level of protection and the protection against the units without thermal imaging, shouldn't be 100%.

Yes, thermal sight and smoke is a game changer for NATO. And yes, we are working to improve the thermal/smoke issue, but it probably won't be seen until we get to Southern Storm since it is going to take a rewrite of part of the code.

Smoke is a full LOS blocker between units on the same level. In hex smoke with a unit is partially obstructing. Not all NATO units have Thermal Sights.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

Good to know, I wasn't aware of that.

I wonder, do the laser range finder work through smoke? There could be a penalty for the unit that shoot through the smoke.

The laser range finder works through smoke, but is less effective than in unobfuscated situations.

The game applies penalties for spotting/shooting through smoke, with accuracy bonuses for laser range finders, which in turn can be reduced when the target has laser warning receivers or is capable of deploying vehicle smoke.

Thanks for the information! Now i will have to test if that penalty is worth my tank not returning fire (does not seems worth to me!)

On a different matter, do somebody know if the Canadian Leo1 had any thermals in the cold war?

Canadian Leo1s only had night/image intensifier sights in the 80s. No thermals.
