Mud in the central zone, predicted mud in the south did not happen.

AGN. Leningrad is saved by the mud. Soviets are retreating in front of the Finns so we will follow up.

AGN. Moscow has been resupplied. Will start assaulting the last hex though don't expect to take it too quickly. To the East we will press the advance towards Vladimir and Ivanovo. Did three HQBs but most of them have only around 100% fuel.

AGS. We will work to get across the river north of Voronezh. May not even get an attack in this turn but if not at least some of 6th Army can rest - fatigue levels are up to 80%.

At Rostov would hope to get a couple of divisions across the river and bring up PG1 ready for next turn.

The air war has been quiet, 151 for 11 in the Soviet turn, mostly resupplying Moscow.

AGC. We make three attacks (shown below) into the defensive line which all win, am through the strongest fortifications. Have also crossed the river to the North. A tricky situation for the Soviets, will see if they work to hold the line or fall back. Two HQBs ready to support the assault next turn.
The two attacks on Moscow fail.
Had ground support ON and most of my bombers on Night, air losses are around 350 for 20 for these five battles.

AGS. Voronezh we are in position to attack next turn. At Rostov the Don is crossed by two infantry divisions; though they may get counter attacked. We do an HQB for next turn.

Unfortunately the weather forecast didn't hold and even though mud was forecast for the Rostov area, the weather
was clear instead. The Axis successfully attacked across the Don river just east of Rostov and set up a bridgehead
comprising of 2 German divisions on the Southern bank. A dangerous situation.

Under the determined leadership of General Zhukov, a counterattack on the bridgehead was attempted led by
the 1st Guards Rifle Division. It was successful and the two German divisions were forced to retreat back across
the river. Rostov is safe for one more turn.

GT 14 Air War

Post by Grognard1812 »

The Luftwaffe based most of their air units in the Moscow area.

The Soviet air force conducted multiple airfield bombing missions but loses were heavy.

On one mission the Soviet air force lost 82 planes for the loss of only 4 by the Luftwaffe.

The Luftwaffe lost 61 Messerschmitt fighters (four weeks worth of German fighter production) during GT 14,
but Soviet air loses were heavy.

Yesterday, I noted that thedoctorking had Zhukov commanding 3 Army in front of Moscow... interesting that it is not standard practice.

Still looking really bleak for the Soviets here.

T15.
Weather clear.

Should hopefully finish off Leningrad this turn.
Can get a couple of assaults on Moscow.
The Soviets have retreated to the East of Moscow, will follow up and attack.
At Voronezh will try and assault across the river and make a bridgehead.
At Rostov my bridgehead has been pushed back and a couple of Cavalry units are visiting our side of the river. Can hopefully make a successful attack across the Don though not sure if my armour has enough MPs to get across.

Air war. Soviets have carried out some 100 or so bombings around Moscow and I lose 61 fighters for 719 aircraft. Have enough in the pool to cover this for now. Not too many supplies got through to Moscow. We will rest the Luftwaffe fighters for the rest of the turn.

Leningrad falls.
Moscow survives two more attacks but should fall next turn as the defenders are ground down.
East of Moscow we follow up, crossing the Volga to the North. Just South of Vladmir I find a weak spot and advance 5 hexes. Two more HQBs for next turn.
The defences at Voronezh are strong so we attack further north and get across the river. Also have attack coming down from further North in the gap between the rivers.
At Rostov we fight our way across the river at the same spot and this time get three Pz. Divisions into the bridgehead. However there are strong Soviet forces and it will be heavy going for the next few turns

The Axis pushed across 3 panzer divisions south of the Don, near Rostov. General Zhukov has been ordered to set up
a defensive area around the panzer bridgehead to prevent it from expanding and threatening Rostov.

T16.
Mud stops all attacks north of Voronezh. Not good as had prospects of breaking out to the north east of Moscow and that chance may well be gone, so a significant intervention by the weather gods. The attack around Voronezh is also halted. Moscow also gets a reprieve which blocks the FBD.

At Rostov it take six attacks to clear another hex across the river, which we occupy with three more armoured divisions. Am not at all sure if it is worthwhile continuing the attack here as expect even if I take Rostov it will be recaptured in the Blizzard. Perhaps depends on what weather turns up over the coming few turns.

It looks to me like the supply mod in the latest patch is making a difference, am getting around 30% fuel for panzer divisions within 150 miles of the railhead. Can anyone say what it used to be with the previous patch ?

Mud, mud, mud everywhere in the Northern Soviet Weather Zone.

As the weather forecast was for clear weather, fate was kind on GT 16 to the Red Army.

The Axis pushed across another panzer corps of units comprising of two motorized divisions and a panzer division
south of the river Don near Rostov. General Zhukov was called upon again to stabilize the situation. An attack
was planned against the hex with an estimated defense value of 42.

Before the main assault two bomb unit missions were conducted followed by 3 separate single division attacks,
which reduced the estimated defense value of the stack to 38.

Then General Zhukov led a 12 division attack (including 7 of the best infantry divisions in the Soviet army) which
succeeded in retreating the 3 German divisions back across the river, slowing the Axis assault on Rostov.

Hopefully Rostov is safe until the snow turns.

Yup, Zhukov is a beast. I love using him for attacks like this. :)

This was a significant setback for the AGS, probably balances out some of the luck I had with a couple of fortunate results a few turns ago.
IMO Zhukov is historically not the best Soviet leader and over rated in the game, however much like the 'top' British general good at self promotion.

Which generals do you rate higher?
I am a vasilevksy fan but I am not really an expert on this topic.
Even higher I rate marshal tuchatchevsky, but unfortunately he was executed in the 1930s purges. I believe he could have made life very difficult for the Germans.
