Conflict of Nations: CharlieVane v. Belfry-DBB-C-28

Post by FlyByKnight »

Recently my request for a Japanese opponent in another PBEM was answered by a Mr. Belfry. I wanted DBB-A, but it turned out he had the December 8th turn from a prior game that ended after just 3 turns. It was in DBB-C, the one where transports have less carrying capacity. I learned from the previous allied player, 821Bobo, that he stopped mainly due to sync issues. I will see how that affects my own experience.
Here are the settings:

1 day turns

FOW - ON

Advanced weather effects - ON

Allied damage control - ON

Dec 7th surprise - ON

Reliable USN torpedoes - OFF

Realistic R&D - ON

Combat reports - ON

Auto sub ops - OFF

Auto upgrade ships and air groups - OFF

Accept air and ground replacements - OFF

PDU - ON

Historical first turn on

Reinforcements +/- 15 days

Facilities expand at start off

Big Babes -c Scen 28

Latest Patch

Extended Map with stacking limits

House Rules:

No Allied 4E Naval bombing below 10k altitude

No single ship MTB/Patrol boat/Small Craft/Yard oilers TF just left in ports to confuse naval bombing.

As you may know, the only other PBEM I have done so far was RHS 123 against Bristolduke as the Japanese.
I'm going in blind. My only consolation is that with Historical first turn on, there can't be that many decisions from the last player to go over.
Time to watch the December 7th replay...

The obvious question is - "Will each shell do at least 0ne Million Dollars worth of damage?" If not, someone needs to look at this again and rethink it.

I followed my own route along the map to surmount the excess of clicks required.
1: USSR
Set all air groups to train, set some units to rest and expanded some airfields.
2:China
Wow, China is such a mess. in RHS, there was a decent amount of supply. Here, there is a distressing amount of red and yellow exclamation marks. All I really want to do is pull back in some places and take Ichang and Hsin Yang. Japanese units are on the move in the North, the Indochinese border, and Nanchang, trying to attack some lonely units.
3:Burma
Nothing is happening in Burma. One problem is that the AVG is currently stuck in Toungoo with half the aviation support they need. I can't move any air groups around because of the damaged planes. Starting reinforcement convoys are heading to India instead of Rangoon.
4:India
Mostly sorting out units for assembly and putting ships in major ports.
5:Malaya
All air groups are heading back to Singapore or waiting for their planes to repair.
One odd feature of RHs I have noticed is that the Australian divisional components can no longer be merged. They are stuck at brigade level. Same for the Dutch units. In RHS I could assemble 3 KNIL Divisions at Java. Here only regiments are available.
Prince of Wales arrived in Singapore on the 9th with 14 SYS, 18FL and 33 ENG making 15 knots. I'll stick her in pierside. As for the rest of Force Z, that's for tomorrow.
There's some one-ship tf's that are being re-routed from trouble spots back to India or the West coast.
6:NEI
I moved some units around to reassemble and set air units to train. Mines are being laid in key hexes.
7:New Zealand
Set units to rest. Sadly, units in NZ cannot be transferred to unrestricted HQ's like in RHS. There's also a severe lack of political points. You get 10000 of them or some generously high number like that in RHS.
8:Australia
Set units to train.
9:Philippines
Everyone on Luzon is heading to the 'iron triangle' of Manila, Clark, and Bataan.
The Asiatic fleet is going to meet up at Balikpapan.
10:Hawaii
Air units are being set to rest. Replacements were turned on for all AA units. It will take at least a year for Oklahoma, California, and Tennessee to be repaired. The Airfield is at 40 damage.
11:West Coast
More training and resting for ground and air units.
12:Canada
Air units are training for Naval search.
13:Misc
Enterprise will move near Wake island to take VMF-211 aboard. Lexington is heading South for now.
Dragon and Durban will try to intercept the invasion force that hits Kuching.
Manila is being cleared out. Multiple task forces sorted by speed are going to run through Makassar strait.
All Submarines in the South China sea have their new patrol zones. This game has Auto sub operations off. That's good, because if there's one thing I hate more than organizing patrol routes for 27 Submarines, it's seeing them leave port automatically.

It was a good day in the air. 27 G3M's and 23 KI-21's shot down. There's already a pilot with 6 kills. Meanwhile, everything else went dreadfully.
The epic sortie of Repulse fighting Haruna and Kongou was not to be. First, I saw in combat animations that they were now bombarding Khota bharu (A series of bombardments that outright destroyed an Indian base force). Then they were attacked by I-165 at night, but the sub was hit twice after missing.
I realized, too late, that the Task force would not make it to Singora in one turn. They wouldn't even reach Khota Bharu.
In one of the very first morning air attacks, I saw this:
Morning Air attack on TF, near Kuantan at 54,79

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 14 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G3M2 Nell x 27

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 3 damaged

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Express

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 45cm Type 91 Torp
3 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 45cm Type 91 Torp

They came back in the Afternoon but only attacked the Destroyers:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kuantan at 54,79

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G3M2 Nell x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
DD Vampire
DD Tenedos

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 45cm Type 91 Torp

Repulse can only make 8 knots. She was placed in an escort TF with HMS Express. The rest of "Force Z" (Current Flagship HMS Electra) is heading back to Singapore with them.
USS Penguin will try to flee Guam and head to Rabaul.
The only other major hitch in my plan was when certain TF's from Hong Kong retreated from their route because I forgot to turn on Absolute threat tolerance.

At and around their destination, Dutch subs had their own successes:

Sub attack near Kota Bharu at 52,74

Japanese Ships
CA Mikuma, Torpedo hits 1

Here's another notable event.

Sub attack near Kota Bharu at 51,75

Japanese Ships
DD Uranami
DMS W-3
xAK Asakasan Maru
DD Ayanami
DD Shikinami
PB Tatsumiya Maru

Allied Ships

PB Tatsumiya Maru attacking submerged sub ....
PB Tatsumiya Maru is out of ASW ammo
PB Tatsumiya Maru is out of ASW ammo
PB Tatsumiya Maru is out of ASW ammo
Escort abandons search for sub

This sub is now a cripple. FLT is 84, it may not survive.

The air successes were in Luzon. Manila AF is untouched, but Clark is at 65 runway damage and 40 airfield damage. A B-17D was also destroyed on the ground when 8 Betties eluded the fighters. Weather played a role in these attacked.
Between these successes, I was so relieved at the lack of a 2-day strike on PH that I forgot the Japanese didn't need to go far if they wanted another target. In my elation at seeing that their TF was supposedly heading east, I sent the Indianapolis/Destroyer minesweeper TF straight back to Pearl. They were then attacked.

I mentioned last turn sending Dragon and Durban to go attack the Japanese fleets that might reach Sarawak and North Borneo. Alas, they bit off more than they could chew. That one fleet with Chokai and Sagiri bumped into them. It might've gone better, but for some reason Dragon COLLIDED with Durban while they were maneuvering! Sagiri was scoring several hits on Durban, but they didn't penetrate. Both fleets fired off torpedoes at long range. Somehow the Japanese closed the distance. It was just after the British Admiral ordered to disengage that Durban was hit by a torpedo from Chokai. A few rounds later, she was hit by another, fired another salvo at Chokai, and sank. The hits on Chokai were bounces or superstructure hits. One of them DID wreck one of her 203MM turrets, according to the messages.

I forgot, of course, that there might be other forces about. Back to Enterprise. I sent that TF south of Wake Island to save VMF 211. She had an extra 12 slots that would fit the squad. 11 planes are currently onboard. The bad news is that the Japanese know what I'm up to. Last turn there AO TF was in the Johnston Atoll hex and the Carriers were moving South. Now the Carriers are moving Northwest. I'm going to send Enterprise through the Marshalls to Sydney.

I have a dilemma in Singapore. Right now Prince of Wales will take 15 days to repair pierside at high priority. She has 6 major FLTand 31 Major ENG.
Repulse will take 30 days to repair pierside at high priority. She has 47 major FLT and 14 major ENG damage. I should also mention that her rear turret was apparently destroyed by a torpedo hit. Neither will make full speed. What should I do with them?

ORIGINAL: Big B

The obvious question is - "Will each shell do at least 0ne Million Dollars worth of damage?" If not, someone needs to look at this again and rethink it.

Amphibious Assault at Tulagi (114,137)

Get a load of this. We've got some real deep Southern incursions here. First Luganville, than Buin on the 12th, now Tulagi! These are some really ambitious moves. I congratulate my opponent on his brazen strategic choices. I'm also drawing the line at the New Hebrides. That convoy with Pensacola is heading to Noumea. If he tries to pull and Operation F/S, I will defend. Not going to attack those SNLF units that have just landed though. The Allies will wait until the Japanese have built up those bases and added some planes to attack. The idea is to let them form their precious chain and then break it. If the invasion TF's should happen to cross paths with Enterprise on her course to Sydney, that's their problem.

That's right. He'd better enjoy those victories for now, because by 1943 I'm going to be the one rocking around the clock.

Until then, observe why I dislike MTB's:

I made the British boats from HK take an arduous journey to Luzon. Based out of one of the Northern hexes, they attacked a Japanese surface group at San Fernando and lost 3 of their number.
That Japanese Surface TF has been lurking at Lubang for a day or two, hoping to bag non-existent stragglers from Manila. PT boats were the only thing I had to make them go away.

In the end, it was MTB 10 out of that mix of boats that fired its torpedoes and took a harmless burst of 13mm fire from Inazuma.

There's an odd development at Mersing. Last turn the Japanese were moving into the neighboring hex, now they aren't. Is this a case of sportsmanship? I'll take it. The longer that city is held, the more Prince of Wales and Repulse can be repaired for their dash through the Java Sea.
I might Transport the components of the 30th AUS Brigade to Noumea and Suva to shore up defenses in the area.

Did you have any of the Enterprise's SBDs out on scouting missions? What are the stats of your squadron commanders, they might not fly if their aggressive rating is too low.

Did you have any of the Enterprise's SBDs out on scouting missions? What are the stats of your squadron commanders, they might not fly if their aggressive rating is too low.

All the gentlemen leading the Bomber groups have good skills. I suppose it was a coordination error. Or the size of the target fleet meant that a small strike was launched.

The obvious question is - "Will each shell do at least 0ne Million Dollars worth of damage?" If not, someone needs to look at this again and rethink it.

Before I discuss the next turn, let me regale you with a humorous little incident from the combat replay.
In the night movement phase, USS Sailfish creeps up on the transport Daigen Maru. She surfaces to attack. The crew on Daigen Maru are more alert than normal, however. They start firing at Sailfish with their 8cm Deck gun. The CO of Sailfish, presumably in a fit of fear, orders torpedoes to be fired.
I watched, mesmerized, as the first torpedo misses, followed by the second. Sailfish is, of course, firing with her 3 inch deck gun and does score a hit. Then another Torpedo hits Daigen maru-it is a dud. Sailfish lands another hit or two with her deck gun, but Daigen Maru lands a hit with her 8cm gun that destroyed a 12.7mm machine gun mount and penetrated Sailfish's deck. After that. Sailfish fired another two torpedoes or pairs of them and missed.
I skipeed the rest of the replay. In total, Daigen Maru was hit 7 times with no additional damage reports, Sailfish was hit once. Just a little example of the oddities that can appear in combat replays.

You say that but their experience climbs ridiculously fast if they survive an encounter with a sub that has them trading gun fire.
