That could be an Americanism. The term "buzzard" in the old world and Africa always refers to what you and I would call hawks.

Sometimes turkey vultures are referred to as "turkey buzzards". The old world didn't have turkeys, although they are related to peacocks, so that usage would be meaningless to them. But the origin of the word "buzzard" is European and it is especially applied to the genus Buteo which are a category of hawks. Similarly, in Europe they call what we in North America call moose (wapiti), elk. They call what we call elk, deer. Big deer, but deer.

It could be a Cooper's or a Red-Tail. Red-Tails are as big as Bald Eagles. Here's a juvenile:

I'm pretty sure we have both of those around here. I have seen various falcons and hawks here, but none (when perched) looked as big in the body as this bird did.

Buzzard is kind of a generic name meaning hawk. Vultures are not buzzards. With hawks, the females can be much larger than the males. So my guess is either a female Cooper's or a female Red-Tail. Full grown Red-Tails don't tend to have that much light colored feathers on the breast so my best guess is a female Cooper's.

If chilly weather has set in, the puffing up of feathers to trap a layer of warm air could also make the body look bigger.

Fly-thru is not needed because there is no one who can fly here. Obesity became widespead among junk food loving American eagles

Some sort of hawk just strafed my yard and left a cloud of (dove, I think) feathers floating.

Here are some of the feathers left behind. They are Mourning Dove feathers, which, if I were a hawk would be my favorite snack. Not the feathers, the dove.

The strike occurred about 8 ft. off the ground and it was just a flash, a bunch of doves and other birds took off and then whap!

Indian chick is a beauty. That bird is a golden eagle. I read an article about this guy in eastern Siberia, not a Mongol but another ethnicity, who rode around on a horse hunting with a golden. That bird could take down anything, mountain goats and wolves, just by knocking them off of whatever high place they were at, falling to their deaths.
