Airfield attack. Can someone explain me this?

I've started a game in a Poland scenario (not the one that comes with the game, but an old one from COW times) and I've found a strange issue.

I've marked in the the uploaded screenshot the airfields in range of a certain bomber unit. I can target the ones I marked with the blue circle, but not the ones in red. They're certainly inside my bomber unit range,but for some reason I can't get the menu to order Airfield attack. I can't target the AA units stacked in the same hexes either.

Any explanations I've missed?

OK, I think the problem comes from the range display, not the mechanics.

That circle is wrong. I counted the hexes from my bomber unit to the airfield and it was 1 extra hex, so they were out of range, even though the blue circle shows it inside. I'll go back to hexagon, which looks odd, but seems to be more accurate.

Notice how now the 2 airfields are OUT of the range hex.

As for the general question, what the difference between an airfield attack and a stack attack by air units is, I covered this in Tutorial '44; including some snippets of the toawlog.txt so show what units will actually defend the hex.
