Have you sent an extra corps or 2 down to wenchow? (the coastal city in china) I find making the IJA use the big guns or allocating more divisions here a good thing (tm) seeing as it'll take him longer to take the base and spend more assets doing it.

Though I was confused upon checking the in-game map. There are two one-ship TF's in the same hex. One is going east, the other is going West. I will wait too see if the Destroyers start bombarding Balikpapan next turn, then send out an attack force. Better to bag them both than to leave 4 Kagerou Destroyers alive for more fighting.

On the 25th, the Dutch Navy sortied in small numbers to engage the Japanese landing task force at Madjene. They won't meet the enemy until the 27th.

I forgot to mention: two days back I snuck 3 long-range tankers and a minesweeper escort out of Singapore loaded with fuel. They're in the clear as of now.

Today, the proud tradition among American Submarines of killing destroyers began.
It was early in the night, near Donggala, when USS Searaven spotted the Tade, a transport destroyer. She fired four torpedoes. The first was a dud. I threw up my hands in sadness. There was no way a Submarine could hit a target like a destroyer with more than one torpedo per spread. So I thought.
When the second torpedo hit, it caused fire and heavy damage. Tade is now listed as sunk.

USS S-37 tried twice in a row to shoot the Destroyer Wakaba and missed.

The Dutch do it again.

Post by FlyByKnight »

It was on Christmas day that a Dutch fleet led by Rear Admiral N. Renner headed off to engage Japanese forced near Madjene. The fleet consisted of the 3 Light Cruisers in service with the Dutch Navy and Destroyers Eversten, Kortaener, Piet Hein, and Van Ghent.
In the very early hours of the 27th, this force encountered a Japanese Destroyer Division. The ensuing battled started off badly when the enemy Commander crossed the Dutch 'T'
After a few minutes of firing by the CL's, Destroyer Natsushio drew first blood when she hit HNMLS Kortaener. The single shot pierced Kortaener's armor and started a fire amidships. She was hit again shortly after. This wouldn't have been a problem if she had managed NOT to collide with the HMNLS Java, Admiral Renner's flagship. Worse, this occurred shortly after Commander Nagai ordered the Japanese fleet to disengage.
Before they were out of range, Hatsushio made one last hit on Kortaener.
She and Van Ghent were detached from the task force. Shortly afterward, the ramining Dutch ships ran into Japanese troop transport Ural maru.

This was very puzzling. Was the transport always independent? Did a larger task force split up previously? How did the Dutch let this perfect target escape? This is like Badoeng strait, but even more humiliating.

So, first S-37 tries to shoot Wakaba two times, then Swordfish attacks Hatsushima twice. Whatever could it mean?

There are still more air raids at Luzon. At the very least, the miniscule AA sometimes causes more than one bomber to be damaged.

In the afternoon phase, the Dutch flying boats uncovered another deep invasion force by the Japanese:

About the only really crazy events to occur in the past three turns were:
On December 29th, a big Japanese raid tried to bomb Singapore's airfield. The bombers ran into a CAP totaling 58 Buffaloes. 65 Nells and Betties were shot down.

The next day, they were tested first by Zeroes sweeping at something like 24000 feet and Ki-43 Oscars. A total of 8 Buffaloes were lost.

Clark field was occupied by the Japanese on the 30th. The airfield was just too badly damaged for forts to get constructed.

A Japanese unit crossed into Loyang over a river on the 28th. A futile attack, but the presence of that unit meant that the Chinese army in Chengchow was blocked from retreating for some reason:

Owing to the poor terrain, Loyang must be abandoned.

In the east Indies, the Japanese invaded Oosthaven. Search planes spotted an invasion force at Kendari, supported by two small carrier TF's. A group of DO-24's were almost intercepted by their fighters, but got through due to poor weather and missed.
Their is another TF at Namlea that may pick up the SNLF unit there.

Strange tales of success.

Post by FlyByKnight »

It was on January second that the first Major Japanese warship was sunk.
At Babeldaop, USS Perch spotted the Escort carrier Taiyou and fired 4 torpedoes. Only one dud impacted.
Shortly afterwards, another submarine spotted this carrier. It was K14, a Dutch boat.
Thanks to working torpedoes, K14 was able to hit Taiyou with 3 fish in one spread. The ship had fire and heavy damage, but was still afloat.
After that, Perch returned and scored another hit.
I heard the sinking sound. 17 A5m4 Claudes were reported lost on the ground. I'd say that's a wrap.
Perch was attacked by a PB afterwards and took 12 sys damage.
Things got weird in the next turn. Belfry said he couldn't explain why what happened took place. I'll just post the reports.

You should note that at the time I sent the last few ships in Manila on suicidal transport runs to Cebu, Leyte, etc. Perhaps this was due to aggression or reactiveness settings for the Japanese. Either way, Kiso, Ikazuchi, and Inazuma were listed as sunk. It's rather annoying that it took a glitch in the game to take out these ships. I would've preferred to eliminate them myself. I'm the only one who should be able to make things easier for me.
Those were the main 'successes' of the past five turns. Before them, the Japanese landed at multiple places in the Celebes. I sent in the subs to find weak spots, knowing that Ryuujo and and at least one other Carrier were in the area.

The air war in Singapore is a mess. Air battles on the 31st and the 1st cost the Commonwealth a total of 23 Buffalos. Not one Japanese plane was shot down on the 1st. I stood down all fighter wings to let damaged planes repair. They will be sweeping again on the 5th.
The only other part of Malaya that matters is Temuloh. For the past few days the combat report has shown this:

Ground combat at Temuloh (50,78)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 4032 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 127

Defending force 5665 troops, 52 guns, 35 vehicles, Assault Value = 176

Assaulting units:
56th Infantry Regiment

Defending units:
8th Indian Brigade
FMSV Brigade
22nd Indian Brigade
3rd HK&S Light AA Regiment
1st ISF Base Force

It is also getting bombed and surrounded by other enemy units.

China is going to be a pain. Hopefully I can outlast Greyjoy in time spent defending it from the Japanese.

I haven't had much luck with American Subs. Ever since they evacuated Manila (Not because of aerial threats-the Japanese bombers olny hit the now-empty airfield-but because the Damned port at Manila can't resupply subs with torpedoes), they've all been sent to Soerbaja, with the exception of one or two that went to Batavia and a few that are still hovering around Indochina and Malaya.
The trouble with being based at Sorebaja is that the Japanese push at Java hasn't arrived yet, and the Celebes is just far away enough that Subs can't intercept newly-spotted task forces in time. Case in point, on the 6th of January, a might Japanese bombardment force went to attack Makassar:

As you can see, not a whole lot of hits on the poor Dutch defenders. I sent out a horde of Americo-Dutch subs at once.

Alas, it took another day for the subs to arrive. Based on intel reports, I re-routed many of them to the Celebes and Ternate to intercept reinforcement convoys. For another two weeks, there wasn't much in the realm of results, aside from when S-36 torpedoed IJN Isuzu on the 12th:

The whole Oosthaven saga deserves its own entry.

Betwixt other events, I became aware that the KB was in the sea between Ternate and the Celebes (not as odd a place as the Southern tip of Australia, as Mr. CanoeRebel can attest). There was also another Carrier force somewhere in the Makasssar strait that intercepted the Dutch B339's set to strafe what I thought were TF's heading to Balikpapan (I sent a sub Swarm to counter them too, perhaps he had some idea of what I might do and recalled them).
I sent out some subs to catch the KB. 5 days of waiting later, it was on the 17th that an allied sub caught the Japanese carriers.

See, this is why having a task force linger in one hex is bad.

3 hits on 6 torpedoes? It appears to me that he was lingering in that hex because he was out of fuel.

On 15 September, 1942 the I-19 launched a spread of 6 torpedoes at the Wasp hitting it with 3 of 6 torpedoes and sunk while she was underway. Not only that but 1 torpedo of the 6 hit the DD415 O'Brien and sank it and also BB55 North Carolina with 1 torpedo putting her into the yards for repair and refitting for 6 weeks. Thus making it the most deadly single spread of torpedoes in WWII, sinking a carrier, Destroyer and damaging a BB with 5 out of 6 torpedoes fired.

Stretching to the South.

Post by FlyByKnight »

I mentioned early on that Luganville was invaded by one of those starting Naval Guard invasion TF's. Now it seems that this was just the start of an ahistorical move to the South Pacific. In the post-air phase of January 22nd, I observed this report:
Amphibious Assault at Tanna (120,157)

TF 129 troops unloading over beach at Tanna, 120,157

15 Support troops lost from landing craft during unload of Maizuru 1st SNLF

I wasn't so concerned over this. He'll need to find engineer and Airbase units somewhere, which will take a while. So will moving Air groups, unless he wants to dela with ops losses from transferring over long distances.
The unloading went on for another day before I remembered the presence of a French Destroyer at Fiji:

The situation as of February 8th

I will try and provide a summary of the game for the past month in the next few posts. For starters, here is the Strategic map.
In the background, you have a handy view of the situation in China, which will be detailed later.
