FITE 2 for Newcomers

Post by gliz2 »

After playing this for over 100 hrs (12 games) here are some observations:
1. Don't play against Elmer. He's no challenge at all. Well as Nazi it provides some limited. I stay corrected: it is a HUMAN vs HUMAN scenario. Hence Elmer is not implemented :)
2. If you want challenging gameplay play against yourself. Sounds weird? Well there is this new amazing PO option which gives you possibility of passing units (like Corps) under ELmer command. You give them objectives and Elmer does his best (which is not half bad but don't expect too much) to achieve. And it adds to the realisms and feeling of not being in God-mode.
3. Playing against yourself gives you a lot of challenge but also stimulates thinking. You'd be suprized how many new tactics you will develop.
4. Playing against a human opponet is frustrating. IT's too big. Sooner rather then later PBEM will stop.
4. The scenario is hughe. It takes time but it is time well invested.

STANDARD APPROACH TO A TURN valid for ALL scenarios
taken from here
1. Move units not intended to be in combat (rear area, recon that won't be attacking)
2. Move units intended for attacks into contact; try not to exceed more than 1/3 of their movement to get into contact
3. For units that have not moved which are capable of land bombardment, naval bombardment, air missions - execute those as they are unlikely to use up more than 1/3 of the time stamp; do not use assets that needed to move a significant distance to get into range/rebase as these may use up more time; save these for the second wave attacks
4. Plan and execute first wave of attacks from units you moved to contact in #2
5. Based on the time stamp after the first wave of attacks have run, you should be able to repeat the process to use up the remaining time for exploitation movement/attacks; during these "second wave" movement attacks you can use bombardment/airstrike assets from units that moved in #1, but were held back so as to leave the timestamp as low as possible at the start of #5

WHEN MOVING STACK of UNITS
1. Chooose a stack.
2. Press spacebar (unit counters will disappear - you'll be seeing only the map)
3. Move the stack to the desired location.
4. Press spacebar (unit counters will become visible again).

This speeds the movement of stacks from sloooooooooooooooooow to superfast :)

Thanks and credits go to all those who helped me in the other thread.

The DRAWN ORDERS
The idea of drawn orders is simple. Since you play quasi-historical thing you should also have a quasi-historical environment.
The concept is based on the following set of orders set for specific situations. Decided by 2 rolls of 6-cube. First city is PRIMARY objective.

STEP 1 <Initial Phase>
GER: 1/12 - Push for Moscov and Kiev
GER: 2,3/11 - Push for Leningrad and Moscov
GER: 4,5,6/8,9,10 - Push for Kiev, Leningrad and Moscov
GER: 7 - Push for Moscov and a city of players choice
USSR: 1/12 - Tactical stopping. Units can be freely moved but once dug in they cannot withdraw.
USSR: 2,3,4,5/8,9,10,11 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn and can only be moved (generally) towards enemy.
USSR: 6,7 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn but can be moved freely.

STEP 2a <Minsk or Riga has fallen>
GER: 1/12 - Push for Moscov and Kiev
GER: 2,3/10,11 - Push for Leningrad and Moscov
GER: 4,5,6/8,9 - Push for Kiev, Leningrad and Moscov
GER: 7 - Push for Moscov and a city of players choice
USSR: 1/12 - Tactical stopping. Units can be freely moved but once dug in they cannot withdraw.
USSR: 2,3,4,5,6/8,9,10,11 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn and can only be moved (generally) towards enemy.
USSR: 6 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn but can be moved freely.

STEP 2b <Minsk and Riga has fallen>
GER: 1,2,3/9,10,11 - Push for Moscov and Leningrad
GER: 4,5,6,7,8 - Push for Leningrad, Moscov and Kiev.
USSR: 1,2,3,4,5,6/8,9,10,11 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn and can only be moved (generally) towards enemy.
USSR: 6,12 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn but can be moved freely.

STEP 3 <Minsk or Riga and Kiev or Mogiliev/Vitebsk has fallen>
GER: 1,2,3/9,10,11 - Push for Leningrad and Moscov
GER: 4,5,6,7,8 - Push for Kharkov, Leningrad and Moscov
USSR: 1,2,3,4,5,6/8,9,10,11 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn and can only be moved (generally) towards enemy.
USSR: 6,12 - No retreat! Units cannot be withdrawn but can be moved freely.
Plans are worthless, but planning is essential.

Right. It's a fairly...uhm...ambitious scenario. Even if you did find someone who would play to the bitter end it would quite probably take longer than the real war did. There should possibly be options to play through to the end of specific time periods and base victory on whether or not near 'historic' results were achieved with an option to continue the war. Say June 1941 through February 1942, June 1941 to March 1943, June 1941 to March 1944 and June 1941 to wars historic end in 1945. That way you could choose the end date and if you want to continue after that then do so.

It is not that Elmer is not a challenge but that we did not program the PO for either side in this scenario. It is more than just assigning objective assignments. Also, there is no way without a massive rework to the events as they can really only be activated the way it is set up by a human player.

Yeah, remember that this scenario is labeled as "2 human players only".

A side note, in my game the documents button is blank in the FITE2 case, but is working on other scenarios. The doc is there where is supposed to be and I have the software to read it. Weird.

That's because it saves as FITE2 instead of Fire In The East 2[X(] Probably someone forgot to change the name of their last Beta version before releasing it for inclusion in TOAW IV

The eqp folder is also named FITE2

Rename your DOC and BMP file to FITE2 and it should work

Thought that was related to the name, but since everything had the same name "Fire in the east 2"... also the M1 tank in the BMP image was suspicious [:D]
But you are right, is working now after the renaming. Thanks.

So how is the war going?
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man ... weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not [it] an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

From memory we are not allow to post anything from the development board on to the public board. So I have send Tamas a request that I be allowed to post some screen shots. If Tamas gives his approval I will post some screen shots.

I just got this reply from Tamas

"Yes, that is fine, although I would appreciate if you could show as little
as the old "work in progress" UI as possible.

Cheers,
Tamas"

So I will post some pictures tonight

Here the northern part of the front at turn 194. There has been very little action in this area for the pass 3 months.

I was going to try and post some pictures from the very early turns but I was unable to open the save game files. I will look through the pictures that I posted on the development forum and see if I can find some that meet Tamas's requirements. If I find some I will post them over the next 30 mins or so.

The following 3 pictures are from turn 30. Now remember that is from the earlier beta versions and I think was playing round with different graphics and colours. This is not the public version which is superior to what we started with. The first person who makes any comment about the colour or graphics and I will not post anymore. I do not want to get into Tamas's bad books because if I am still alive when we start on TOAW 5 I would like to get back on the beta team.
