Looks Brilliant.

Would love to see this completed and perhaps a divisional level campaign added to it.

A WWII Version, very NICE !! I would love it if you might let me try and use that one [:)]

Any plans for a map of North and South America circa 1400-1600 ? No roads or rails so it seems pretty simple ! I'd like to try an Age of Exploration scenario but the map making exceeds my limitations [:(]

Hello sPzAbt653
A WWII Version, very NICE !! I would love it if you might let me try and use that one [:)]

I plan to release the map file "soon" as it is.
(mainly I need to extend North till Murmansk area and east till Baku)
Then I will keep updating the file (mainly terrain type, roads) and post a link at the beginnig of this thread.
In such a way if somebody start a campaign design, then it will be possible to import updated map data without affecting campaign design (OOBs, scripts ect...)

This is not something I was particulary thinking about, but If you really need I can start to consider it.
Just PM me for further details.

Hi Christophe, it's not something that I 'really need', but to explain, first I did this:
tm.asp?m=3404128
and as I said in that thread there was an inspiration to do a larger scenario, but TOAW IV destroyed the original and nixed further plans. While working on SC3 Mods it occurred to me that SC3 might work much better with a scenario like this than did TOAW so I was going to attempt it, but my map making foray was a failure.
Therefore when I saw your wonderful map work, I thought that if you are the person that just loves making maps, well then I will ask. On the other hand, if the map is a tedious pain then it is not worth doing, since we get nothing for it anyway. [;)]

ok understand.
the map I have seen in your thread is not too big (in terms of nbr of hexes), so I think I can do quite fastly a clone version for SCIII engine.
In case of larger scenario, do you mean larger map?
If yes just tell me wich scale you are thinking about
I will be interesting to contribute to non WW2 campaign, so just let me know what kind of map you expect then I can start some draft version.

Oh yes, a larger map, lol. The idea is to expand on that original scenario and make the map about as large as it can go north to south. Attached is a map that I thought I might use so I put a grid over it. It's a basic map because it will depict something like 1400-1700, so no roads. No terrain or cities are needed because I would add in some forest/jungle and big rivers. I would also determine how to deal with Resources and their placement. You don't need to do borders or place names as it is a regional thing and I would approximate that stuff and add it in based on the original.

It's the coast lines that are all the work [the easiest part, right [;)] ]

I've noddled thru the preliminary parameters and behaviors, and I think the only issue I might have is turn length. Optimally a turn would be five years, and I don't think that is possible so might have to somehow fudge it.

ok
But the map height can be 256 hexes maximum.

what I was thinking to do:
- Find a reference high-res map of north and south american continent
- with as much details as possible (cities, mountains, rivers) even contemporary one is ok.
- fit all in a 256 height hex grid.

I understand you need only coastline, but by starting such big map. I think it should be worthy that the reference image map includes key cities location and rivers.
It will then be "easier" to upgrade from conquistador time to independence or American civil war.
for future mods[:)]

That all sounds very good.

I think I did make that grid so that it fit 256 hexes from a passage thru to Hudson Bay in the north to a couple hexes around Cape Horn in the south. But it doesn't matter if you are going with a better source. I was looking for a basic map and that is what I found. It's a huge area so finding one continuous map is a challenge.

Here is map with raw coastlines.
Let me know if aera covered fits your wishes, then I can start coastlines fine tuning.
It may take a while so be patient.
I had to set 2 capitals (1 axis/ 1 allied) in order to save the file, this is due to game engine so UK and germany capitals are on north east aera of the map.
it can be changed later and should be no problem
