A.I. Very Slow; Each Turn takes 8+ Minutes

Post by Oldhams »

Love the game but Im ready to abandon it due to the wait time for the AI to complete a turn. I'm not prone to over-exaggeration so I timed the game over 4 turns, noted how long a turn took and it averaged 8 full minutes. Here is what I've tried:

- I've disabled all AI options in Settings in game;
- Game has performed like this since initial release, no change in user hardware;
- All non-essential apps closed on PC;
- PC Specs: CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 2.80 GHz, 12 GB RAM, Win 7 64-bit, Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 (DxDiag attached)

Let me know what I might try, its rather disappointing.

If I'm not mistaken, if you want to speed things up you shouldn't disable all three AI settings.
Try leaving Quick Moves enabled, and disable the other two.
I suspect that disabling all three works at cross-purposes.
Apart from that, understand that the slower the AI, the better the game it will give you when it isn't squandering processing power on churning through cosmetics.
Even at the AI's slowest, your delay is still less than what you would go through if you were waiting for a human opponent to send his turn by PBEM, where the game really shines.
If you want instant gratification, you might try playing against yourself in Hotseat. If nothing else you'll have an opponent of perfectly equal skill.

I have 6 CPU 24GB memory computer(s) Even with this for large games the AI can take a long time. Lets face it, it takes a lot of complex code to make a smart challenging AI.

My solution is multi-tasking. Some of the things I do at same time the AI is crunching, either on another screen or another co-located computer, are: email culling, matrix forum browsing, Quicken checkbook updates, etc. Sometimes I even go for old fashion reading. [:)]

So all you developers out there tight code is good, smart code is better.

That CPU is about 7 years old. It might be the problem.
And even at that time it wasn't really fast on single core performance.
Strategic command is using 1 CPU core most of the time, so having 6 cores won't help much.
If you look at the comparison here, you see the difference between a modern CPU and yours.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.ph ... &cmp[]=390 (copy paste the whole line)
So the numbers you get seem about right for the hardware.

Some other things that might influence performance:
Which version are you running?
Which campaign are you playing?
Which side are you playing?
How far along in the game are you? More units = more processing time.

I have a modern CPU here, an overclocked 6 core Intel 8700K here on 2560x1440 resolution with beta version 1.10.03.

Just started 1939 Storm over Europe as Axis.
Disabled Show Moves/Combat
Quick Animation turns grey
Disabled Messages (AI Turn)
From the moment I pressed end turn it took 50 seconds for the AI to complete its turn.
I was clicking through my own messages though, and not waiting for them to disappear and actually reading.
Tried the same as allies. That took 49 seconds.

Hi Oldhams,

Turning off 'Show Moves/Combat' and the 'Messages (AI Turn)' will help, but I would also try the latest Beta as well as this should provide an additional speed boost as some routines were recently optimized. For more info and how to access it, download and install please read this thread here:
