Here Come the Commies!

Dateline June 1979 -- Russian media expresses outrage at reports that NATO forces have been destroying bridges along the boarder in response to reports of Warsaw Pact forces massing on the East German Border. In the Kremlin a battle is raging between factions. Convinced that the Russian economy has never recovered from WWII's mauling the military faction believes that now is the time to strike to prevent a collapse of Russia within the next ten years. Meanwhile, the peace faction continues to believe in the inevitable laws of history and thus that an attack is pointless and counterproductive serving to only stir the embers of patriotism in the hearts of the western proletariat.

A week has passed and West Germany is mobilizing while US reinforcements begin to arrive from the US. In the South, NATO has fallen back to stay out of range of initial artillery strikes.

In the north, over opposition from the West German government, troops are pulled back from Kiel and into Hamburg while the Danes dig in behind the Kiel canal. Each turn of peace seems to lead to a stronger NATO that is better prepared. But, Soviet reserves are also moving up. The tension in Europe is on a knife edge while the world prays for peace.

Aide: Sir, the Intel boys wanted me to bring this to you asap. Looks like 4 soviet airborne divisions over the Baltic heading for Denmark. Do you think it's a feint? Hoping to get us to fire first? Radio Moscow is silent.

General: Son, no one puts four divisions on choppers over the ocean unless they mean it. Let's just hope the Danes don't cave and tell everyone to hunker down because the first blow will be hard. I'm just glad they gave us an extra week to mobilize.
