1942 January 06

I suspect the purpose of this surface group was to gain Intel on our naval forces in the DEI. We have deliberately kept them quiet both to keep incidental damage down (most ready for action when needed) and to keep their whereabouts uncertain.

• Our submarines will get their shots at IJN fleet carriers beginning tomorrow.

AHH the power of positive thinking.
ORIGINAL: jwolf

Well, he did say "get their shots" not "hit something" so the thinking wasn't too positive.
My little electronic sailors are quite put out by your lack of enthusiasm. [:'(] they have the finest torpedoes that... well, they have torpedoes! [:D]

Overall
• Lots of action today: invasions and scuffles in the DEI and Papua New Guinea; USN torpedoes that work; stout defense on Luzon; and more.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• No signs of IJN subs for the past two days off the West Coast. A whole bunch of merchantmen and some transports will try to slip down the coast from Eureka to San Francisco without waiting for escort.

Pacific
• More logistics.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Our subs are actively hunting enemy carriers and convoys as they continue invasions in this area.

Philippines
• A good day for the defense at Clark.

• Cagayan was not attacked so I assume they are waiting for more units. On the other hand SigInt reports radio activity there which might be attack orders.

Numerous air strikes were made against the convoy and the CL TF (to the east), plus a CA TF nearing the Makassar Strait. It took a slow flying boat to finally plant one on the convoy.

Aircraft Attacking:

• The other DD seen near western Java yesterday must have made a fast getaway through the minefield but one has surely been sunk in the second attack S-39 made on it this day.

Japanese Ships

Allied Ships
SS S-39

SS S-39 launches 2 torpedoes

• There is another convoy very near Sorong so we have to pull our search planes from there now.

China
• Our units near Nanyang are gaining experience, which is the best case right now.

• Chinese Army units just north of Kukong will withdraw northward so they do not become cut off when powerful Imperial units cut the road.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Additional units are seen approaching Moulmein but none have yet arrived.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Kuantan !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Long Island !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Gebe !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Manus !!!

Overall
• The Empire's advances are well covered and very careful.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• At least one sub is right off San Francisco but our merchants made it safely into harbor via the coast route. Tonight BB West Virginia should make port at Alameda and begin upgrading.

• 2nd USMC Para Bn is loading aboard APD's at Seattle for Midway. BB's Warspite and Colorado will accompany them and remain at Pearl Harbor after.

• BB's Maryland and Pennsylvania will begin heading for San Francisco tonight.

Pacific
• Vast distances control all. Lots of supplying, fueling, and building.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• KB1 has slipped search contact, likely just moved to break contact with our submarines. Search from Port Moresby has been adjusted.

• Houston, Marblehead, and two DD's will pull into Sydney tonight (subs willing). The cruisers will begin repairs while the DD's convert to APD's.

• Enemy sub parked right outside Brisbane.

Philippines
• The first enemy assault at Cagayan went very well for us.
Ground combat at Cagayan (79,89)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 2293 troops, 18 guns, 72 vehicles, Assault Value = 161

Defending force 7658 troops, 29 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 248

101st PA Infantry Regiment
3rd Constabulary Regiment
102nd PA Infantry Regiment
Agusan Constab Battalion
Mindanao Force
Del Monte AAF Base Force /1
Even Imperial tanks did not tip things in their favor, but we are now low on supply.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Depth charge hits are tough to come by.
TF 53 encounters mine field at Banjoewangi (57,107)

Japanese Ships
SS I-156, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
But mines are doing good work for us!

• Betty's are operating from Manado and lashed out at our cruisers far south of Kendari.
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Larantoeka at 67,112

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid detected at 55 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 19 minutes

Allied Ships
CL Danae

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 7000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb
Even worse, Zero's are covering the invasion of Ternate and prevented any attack runs by our multiple sorties this day.

China
• There are indications the Empire will move in force on the road to Ankang.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• The waiting game.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Nothing.

INVADED
Amphibious TF 145 offshore of Kofiau
Clark Field, Cagayan, are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Culion is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Pingsiang !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Ternate !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Sansapor !!!

Overall
• It almost feels like we are putting together a defense in the Pacific.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• CV Yorktown will leave San Diego tonight in company of 6 destroyers, bound for Pago Pago.

Pacific
• A sub is spotted just off Suva right after two merchantmen sailing without escort made that harbor to deliver critically needed supplies.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• KB 1 is again seen, in a new position likely to both shake off our subs and prepare to move through the Jomard Passage to menace Port Moresby. We have two subs with 1 and 2 hexes of KB1 so naturally the enemy carriers are doomed.

• Boise will redeploy to eastern Australia to bolster the upcoming defense of Port Moresby. The old DD's with her will convert to APD. The DD's bringing Yorktown to Pago Pago will then redeploy to Australia and join the ANZAC-USN squadron there, freeing the DMS's which accompanied Pensacola and the convoy. The DMS's will escort those empty convoy ships and others back to CONUS.

Philippines
• The Empire continues to ignore diplomatic protests.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• KB2 is 1 hex NW of Singkawang.

• Amid several invasions in that area enemy warships are at Namlea. Air assets have been adjusted somewhat to improve our attacks.

• Our ARD have for the time being evaded Imperial subs.

China
• Even if we patch the defense of Ankang in time, the road from Yenan to Sian might undermine defense of Sian.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Deploying a defensive force to the forest between Pegu and Moulmein. This can only last until Singapore falls.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Nuttin'.

Amphibious TF 20 offshore of Oro Bay
Amphibious TF 88 offshore of Saidor
Clark Field, Cagayan, Pontianak, Johore Bahru, Kofiau are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Bengkalis is occupied by the Japanese

Overall
• A slower day for the Empire but nothing happened that will set them back.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• It looks like Yorktown cleared the enemy sub(s) near San Diego. Sub activity is again noted (and opposed) near SD/LA, SF, and PH.

Pacific
• Perhaps a little over two weeks for Yorktown to reach Pago Pago. Let's hope action begging for USN carriers waits that long.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• KB1 in the same position as yesterday and USS Pompano is trying to make contact.

• British 223 Group HQ has only 2 more squads to fly in from Soerabaja to Darwin so two idle PBY squadrons will begin lifting the group to Port Moresby tomorrow.

• Houston requires a month in the Sydney shipyard, Marblehead less than a week.

Philippines
• One enemy unit appears to be leaving Cagayan, so the beating must have been bad enough to require recovery away from our taunting troops.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• A busy day for our subs and fliers.

• The Dutch squadron was spotted at Batavia by a "carrier aircraft" and although no carriers are currently spotted there was brief sighting of a TF with a CA, a CS, and various destroyers by one of our subs. A second squadron of fighters has been moved in on CAP.

Walter and I are both infected by our game just prior, although that opening was 6 years ago! [:D]

There's a meta game going on in my head - and I just know in his head - about not making the same mistakes, making better decisions, being wiser, and in all of those things adapting them to what the opponent must surely be doing differently this time.

I think the term infected is a good one on a couple of levels. When I had finished the full campaign with Lars, We decided on
a WITE game. I just could not start it. My mind drifted back to AE the soon as I booted up the game. Good grief! Why didn't
I have Halsey as flag in '42 so I wouldn't have gotten plastered at the magical 320nm??? WHY! WHY! LOL! Would have gotten
plastered anyway but maybe I could got "a" lick in.

They were very small AM's with 1 ASW weapon each. Good use of torpedoes.

• Our aircraft in the eastern DEI made many attacks on invading warships and convoys but got no hits. Enemy Zero's were a major obstacle and downed several aircraft.

• The part of the Dutch squadron not in port at Batavia will sortie to the Indian Ocean out of range of KB2 unless it braves the mines in Sunda Strait. Like wise the two RN TF's at Soerabaja will head into the Indian Ocean. The RN TF at Darwin will move east of Timor. All four TF's will be ready to rush KB2 is opportunity arises.

China
• The first reincarnated Chinese Army unit has arrived at Chungking. World War Z begins.

I would think Soerabaja won't be safe for repairs very much longer.
