Supply Newbie

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Supply Newbie

Post by tonyscrase »

Hi

I am playing the allies in the D-Day campaign. I have takes 5 or 6 ports in France

On the english south coast I have set 3 ports to level 4 priority and freight is flowing into them.

Brighton and weymouth are sending freight across to France but Southampton is sending nothing

does anyone know why Southampton may not be sending freight

THANK YOU

You do know that depots wont forward supply to depots with a lower priority? The priority is for stores they get to hold on to. You don't need the UK ports to be that high. I use 0 for inland UK locations (except ones that supply a lot of BC or 8AF bases - those 4E bombers eat supply like a starving man and the depots might be 1 or even 2 to prevent them passing on to the ports). Then the ports can be 1, and locations on the coast of France can be 2. This leaves priorities 2,3,4 for the inland 'front line depots' when you break out and allows concentration of supply and lesser areas to be lower. When I invade (i.e. I haven't got any inland depots) the Mulberries and beach depots all count as front line so I have them at 4 (I'll have supply from anyone who can send it!), but then they progressively drop when I do have depth). In the much later game, ports in France that you dont want to use (such as Bordeaux if you have happened to capture it for some reason) get dropped back to 0, or 1 if they are supplying AF units - 2E bombers and patrol aircraft can be based that far back to avoid having to tap into the congested forwards supply lines.

Hope this helps.

That's the best short sentence explanation of the logistics system that I've seen so far, a real moment of clarity for me.

It doesn't actually say it that way the manual, at least not that I can find and I've been scouring it, the one-page guides, and the living manual pretty thoroughly for the past couple weeks. Going back to 20.4.2 (and a few of the other 20.* sections) and re-reading what I've already read and re-read again and again, after your explanation of the system I still don't see the manual explain it that way. Even searching the forums I never found that clear an explanation.

Then when I go look at my game and see how I have my depots set, I can see why I still have some yellow airbases.

There are probably a number of folks just like myself getting into WitW for the first time due to the holiday bundle sale on Steam, so pardon my newbieness to the game which is now in its 4th year.

Thanks for explaining that!

!!!
I also did not know this. It makes sense now that hmswarspite points it out. Later tonight i'll have to make sure to change priority for the main'exporting-port-type' depots in North Africa from 4 to 1. I have Tunis at 4, Algiers and Bizerte at 3, etc. I thought this would make them the main collection points for supply to export to Sicily and Italy. Instead, turns out they're just hoarding supply - ?

I agree apd1004 that the manual makes this less than clear. Its explanation of how 'auto-fly naval patrol' works is also convoluted -- though I'd hasten to add that in general the manual is excellent and I appreciate the hard work that went into creating it.

What I do is set the exporting depots/ports at #2, any other depots in N Africa or the UK at #1. This keeps some supply around key airbases (perhaps put the depots next to your transports as #2) but means most goes to the port. That way in France/Italy you can use #3 and #4 for the receiving ports (so you have a small degree of gradation). #3 is probably better so you can use #4 for the land bases you really want to prioritise.

Absolutely. I have to say it is one of the most complete game manuals I've seen. I play on 2 monitors with all the PDF's open on the 2nd monitor for easy reference. The info is all in there, you just need to know where to find it. Kind of like a law book.
